Module 6 provides an overview of the
implications of Data Science, Big Data and
Arti!cial Intelligence for decision-making in
organisations.
No organisation is isolated from business
analytics. With the advent of social media
channels, organisations depend heavily on
analytics to gather existing and potential
customer details to enable targeted advertising
in order to chase increased revenue. Analytics
help organisations to gather market intelligence
that supports strategic thinking, planning and
strategy implementation and impact evaluation.

strategy implementation and impact evaluation.
Being able to do much more and much faster
does not necessarily result in better decisionmaking.
Initial bias and blind spots that are
inbuilt in the creation of systems design will lead
to magni!cation of errors in decision-making.
With such ubiquitous data gathering systems
today, everyone needs to have knowledge about
the bene!ts and risks associated with sharing
personal information and storing company
information.
With ever larger systems, there are higher risks
of cyber security attacks that may result in loss
of personal and company data and which could
lead to signi!cant !nancial and reputational
damage.
The role of intuition and ethics frameworks that
are enshrined in organisational policy and
practice guidelines for decision-making do not
disappear with data science, big data and AI.
Our de!nition of intuition equates to a deep
knowing, that only comes with extended
experience and continuous learning of a range
of experiences in a specialized !eld. Intuition is
a higher level of knowing that cannot be
described just as ‘gut’ feel, or an emotion. Our
mind automatically scans for the information
already stored in our brains to select the best
response pertinent to the decision situation in
front of us.
What is the data telling us?
What are the patterns and trends?
What shall we do next?
If we are unsure, what additional data do we
need to have a higher con!dence level about
the decisions that we make?
The human-centred approach, connectedness
and collaborative leadership, where there is a
strong emphasis on positive relationships and
trust, is central to successful decision-making
outcomes for organisations. With increasing
diversity in teams, it is critical that each member
is fully accountable for the team project,
questioning the status quo, interrogating the
validity of data to ensure integrity of data
collection, interpretation and reporting.
