Assignment 2:
Case study
A long-established organization with a strong public profile and a history of stable performance is confronted with a sudden and severe crisis following the collapse of a core operational system. The failure has disrupted services, resulted in significant financial losses, attracted intense media attention, and triggered investigations by regulatory authorities. Public confidence has declined sharply, internal tensions have escalated, and several senior executives have been suspended or have resigned.
Preliminary findings suggest that warning signs were present for several years but were not adequately addressed. Internal reporting mechanisms were weak, risk-related information was filtered as it moved up the management hierarchy, and informal power structures influenced key decisions. Ethical concerns have emerged regarding disclosure practices, accountability, and the treatment of whistleblowers. Employees are uncertain about the future of the organization, while external stakeholders are demanding clarity, responsibility, and corrective action.
A new executive leadership team has been appointed during a period of intense uncertainty. The organization must now manage legal exposure, financial recovery, reputational repair, and internal restructuring simultaneously, all while continuing to operate in a highly competitive and regulated environment.
Task
Examine the case critically and develop a detailed management analysis that addresses the origins of the crisis, the organizational conditions that enabled it, and the implications for leadership, governance, and long-term sustainability. Your analysis should reflect advanced-level engagement with complex managerial realities and demonstrate the ability to deal with ambiguity, competing pressures, and high-stakes decision-making.
