Part (i)
• To create a scholarly annotated research bibliography for your topic. THIS WILL FORM
THE BASIS OF YOUR LITERATURE REVIEW in part (iii) below.
[a minimum of TEN sources is required, encompassing scholarly books, journals, conference
proceedings, and web-based sources]. Annotation: we suggest max 50 words per source.
An annotation is a brief critical evaluation of the author’s argument. A critically annotated
bibliography is one where you write two or three sentences about each work you cite. Note
the relevance to you topic/theme, and the position (or argument) of the author.
[A] 10 MARKS
Part (ii) Using the information sourced in your bibliography:
• [B] locate the architect/artist/sculptor in their correct time period [50 words]
(Tell us the context in which the work was produced: the time period and place; the
political/social milieu; what was the context for the art/architecture)

• [C] locate the work within the architect/artist/sculptor’s oeuvre [100 words]
(oeuvre = artist’s entire folio of work) Is it an early or late work; the first attempt at a new
challenge; a mature solution to problems being explored; what came before; what
followed?)
[C] 3 MARKS
• [D] critically analyse the work you have researched [150 words]
(this is a comprehensive analysis of the work not just a description: tell us about the work
and what makes it significant – to the creator, in its own right, to art/architecture, to design)
[D] 5 MARKS
Part (iii)
• [E] discern what issues are raised by the literature you have searched and succinctly write
your judgement of major issues raised by the authors (the Literature Review) [500 words]
(This will vary from work to work. The literature may identify controversies about the artist,
the work or interpretations of the work. The literature may consider technical, structural or
design matters. The literature may discuss the revolutionary nature of the work. The
literature may present a sound case for the status of the work as a benchmark, or as
developing a new canon. The literature may raise issues to do with feminism, or standards of
criticism, etc.) [D] 20 MARKS
