RESEARCH PROPOSAL PRESENTATION: 100 POINTS
The research proposal presentation is an important milestone in research training. It provides an opportunity for the students to communicate their research ideas to an audience and receive feedback from fellow research students and experienced academics.
Note: Your research proposal presentation is a very important outcome of this course! Take it very seriously! It is worth 50 points. The PowerPoint is worth another 50 points.
In order to deliver an excellent presentation, imagine that you are presenting at 10-Minute Presentation of a Research Proposal. The aim of a proposal presentation is to help students develop presentation skills for presenting their research to public audiences and receive feedback and suggestions. Your research proposal presentation should be 5-7 minutes; this will be followed by a 3-5-minute Q&A.
Suggestions
- A research proposal is intended to convince others that you have a worthwhile research and that you have the competence and the work-plan to complete it.
- Assume that your audience comprises: experts in your topic and intelligent non-experts.
- Your presentation MUST include the following components:
- Introduction/Motivation for the research (Explain why you have chosen this topic. What motivated you?)
- Literature Review (Briefly discuss research performed by others on this topic)
- Gap (Clearly state the gap statement)
- Purpose (Clearly identify the purpose)
- Significance of the research (Explain why this research is worth conducting)
- Method (Explain how you will collect data)
- Since your research is just starting, emphasize the value of your research. Also, you need to do a persuasive presentation rather than an informative presentation.
- PowerPoint/SlideShare. You should treat PowerPoint as a useful tool. You can use it to incorporate images into your presentation, to emphasize important points, and to guide your audience in following your argument. You should not use it for anything else. This means:
- Don’t present too much information on the slides.
- Don’t use too many colors and different hard-to-read font style and size.
- Don’t read from the slides!

- Make sure you practice ahead of time so that you do not repeat yourself, hesitate, or mess up your words. Time yourself giving your talk, and make cuts if you need to. It is fine to end a bit early. Going over time shows your lack of preparation.
