In your view, do employees have either a moral or a legal right to park cars with guns in them in the company parking lot? What do you believe should be the property rights and safety concerns of employers?

Do you think state legislatures are right to get involved, or should the matter be left to companies and employees to settle?

Because the workplace is the company’s private property, the company could choose to allow employees to bring guns not only into the parking lot but also into the workplace itself. Are there ever circumstances in which doing so might be reasonable? Or would the presence of guns automatically violate the rights of other employees to be guaranteed a safe working environment?

ANSWERS

Do you have not only a legal but a moral right to own a gun? Do you believe that you have either a moral or a legal right to park a car with a loaded gun in a privately owned parking lot, regardless of what the lot’s owner wants?

All Americans are given the right to bear arms; however, many have taken this debate to a new level, and the scrutiny of what is allowable by this right is questioned daily. While Americans have a legal right to own a gun, it does not necessarily mean that a person’s morals line up with what was intended by the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.  The Second Amendment was established to protect the right to bear arms. A concealed carry permit allows a gun owner to bring their weapons on their person or in their vehicles.  However, if a privately owned parking lot does not allow for a car to be parked with the gun in it, the gun owner should abide by following the owner’s instructions.  A notice must be posted in a manner that is legally sufficient for all to see, so there are no questions about the owner’s rules. Posting a notice that guns are not allowed is the same premise as a no trespassing notice being posted; you do not enter the premise. In a case like this, the person has to realize that being a law abiding citizen means abiding by what is posted when they are visiting and parking in a private lot.  Regardless of what the gun owner feels and thinks is morally right, they must follow the rules to park there.

In today’s environment, it seems every time the news is turned on, there is a story about someone being shot.  There have been numerous incidents where an employee has caused harm or taken the lives of their co-workers or other innocent individuals.  Incidents, where students have injured or taken the lives of their classmates, teachers, and other school officials, have also been topics in the news.  Employees and pupils have a moral responsibility to notify their authority figures about the presence of a gun on the premises
