ENG 510 Final Project Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric
Overview: In this milestone, you will submit your selection of a classic work and contemporary work of the same genre (such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or drama) around which you will create your writer’s toolkit. You will use these texts to “look under the hood” of these works to unveil the strategies and techniques involved in crafting a creative work. In doing so, you will be better equipped to manipulate the elements of craft in your own work. Prompt: For this short paper, you will select your classic work and contemporary work of the same genre (e.g., fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama). It may be helpful if your contemporary work has been published in the last 30 years or so, because this audience will more closely resemble the one for which you strive to
write. You may consult the Literary Periods & History Timeline infographic or Credo Reference for help in making your selections. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
List your chosen works and state the titles, authors, and time periods.
Explain the rationale of why you chose these two texts, explaining how reading and/or writing in this genre appeals to you.
Identify two to three major literary conventions for each of the time periods associated with the two texts. Support your identifications with research.
Suggest one to two themes that connect to the audiences of the literary time periods of the books you have selected.
