MODULE 3 ASSIGNMENT: RESEARCH AND REPORT
OVERVIEW
What if you, like Jake, end up having or supporting patients that have gastric bypass surgery? Perhaps you are in a position where you have to either recommend for or against this surgery. In this assignment, you will complete your research and report assignment based on what you have learned in this module.
You should spend approximately 3.5 hours on this assignment.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Prepare a written paper to Dr. Jake Smith of at least 500 words that includes the following: What are physiological implications of a gastric band, gastric sleeve, and gastrointestinal bypass? Would you recommend these to a patient? Be specific. Why or why not?
2. In your response be sure to address the following:
Describe the processes of digestion and absorption. Consider the following: Imagine a person just ate a large meal composed of only carbohydrates. Consider the process, from the mouth to the large intestine, of chemical and mechanical digestion of carbohydrates. When a person has surgery, what functions change?
From Jake’s perspective, the person in Jake’s example had respiratory issues as a result of weight gain. Describe how the respiratory system works with other systems to maintain homeostasis, and how weight gain negatively impacts homeostasis.
Consider the following in your response:
What does pulmonary ventilation mean, and how it is controlled?
Consider the differences between external and internal respiration, and the concentration gradient of oxygen and carbon dioxide at both sides of the membranes.
Why is it important to know lung volumes and capacities?
3. Your paper should be formatted as a proper research paper with an introduction and conclusion. Do not simply follow the bullet points above, but really think about what you have learned and how that relates to other material we have covered and knowledge you have from other courses you may have taken.
4. All references must be cited using APA Style format. Please refer to the CCCOnline APA Citation Toolkit.
5. Remember, you can use the library research guides posted for you in the Grading and
Evaluation section of the Syllabus module.
6. Submit your paper to the Module 3 Assignment: Research and Report assignment folder.
See the Course Schedule and Course Rubrics sections in the Syllabus module for due dates and grading information.
