Write an essay analyzing a current issue in the Mission District, and how it is similar to another issue you read about in Karniya’s book about another San Francisco neighborhood. The issue could be a characteristic, problem, dilemma, disaster, cultural treasure or some other issue. It could relate to housing issues, but does not have to. Cite one of Kamiya’s chapters, and two on-line sources about the Mission District (see “Quoting and Citing Sources” below. The text should be 6 full pages text, but not over 7 pages, with 1 page for Works Cited.
1. Reading and Re-reading: Begin with what you know about San Francisco from your own life. review the Kamiya chapters you’ve read recently. look again at the great slide shows students produced on .miya. still on Canvas. the chapter by Cary Cordova (in the 1A Essential Readings pp. 118-121). the new readings I presented to you about the Mission. or other readings you find. Look for patterns. make connections.
2. Steps: 1) Thoughtfully consider the Mission and what characteristic. problem. dilemma. disaster. cultural treasure or other issue you might want to write about. 2) Do required reading on the Mission. and choose an chapter and an issue from Kamiya that compares to the present-day Mission. 3) write a double entry journal comparing Mission / Kamiya chapter. and use that to help you write an outline. 4) Write 1st and 2nd drafts.
3. Topics and Organization: Beyond generic essay structure. this essay should relate Kamiya’s ideas about either Western Addition. Bayview / Hunter’s Point. Chinatown. or the Tenderloin to the present-day Mission. Beyond introduction and conclusion. you will need to have paragraphs that present general background about the Mission that relates to your thesis. another that presents the main issue which you will compare to another S.F. neighborhood in Kamiya. another explaining what makes the issue important. much of your organization will be unique to the issue. chapter. and neighborhood you choose to write about.
4. Thesis: should pose a logical analogy between an issue in the Mission and another San Francisco neighborhood. The analogy should make an important point. It should be on the first page of your essay. It should be one to two sentences long. and it must be italicized. You need to support your thesis. but if problems arise. revise it. rather than throwing it away.
5. Analytical Writing and Style: Opinions are often part of writing a good paper. When you are citing Kamiya or some other source. convey their view objectively but when you explain your view. your style should clearly shift. referring to yourself in some way to making your views clear-cut (not “objective”), rather than trying to make yourself sound like the source. You will use the source for your own purposes.
6. Quoting and Citing Sources: The paper should have a minimum of five quotations. Kamiya must be quoted twice. related to an analogy you are making. A two on-line sources. including one offered by your teacher should be quoted. You are welcome to quote and paraphrase any other source. but you must cite the source. Quotes and paraphrases must be followed by MLA in-text citations. usually like this: (Kamiya 14), or a typical web source like this
(“The Decline of the Mission Coalition”) An MLA-style “Works Cited” page must be written and printed as the last page, including all sources cited in
the text.
