Education Exhibition: Utilitarianism and Dropping the Atomic Bomb
Exploration
of Ethical System
For
my exhibition, I will be discussing utilitarianism as an ethical
system. Utilitarianism makes moral judgments by determining a correct
course of action according to the principle of utility. The principle
of utility “states that actions or behaviors are right in so far as
they promote happiness or pleasure, wrong as they tend to produce
unhappiness or pain” (White). In other words, utilitarianism
calculates how to maximize happiness for the greatest number. For
example, if saving a group of people from a collapsing bridge meant
sacrificing one person to do so, then the ethical action would be to
