INTRODUCTION
• Be very brief
• Introduce the chosen bank
• Explain clearly but concisely why the topics are worth investigating
• Outline the structure of the essay
DISCUSSION – PART A
• This part covers 3 risks: IRR, liquidity risk and OR
• For each risk:
• Critically discuss the relevant literature on the key sources, measurement and
management (academic journals and BIS as well as Basel III documents)
• Critically discuss how much of the risk the chosen bank is exposed to based
on the calculation of the risk using relevant models
• Critically discuss how the bank addresses the regulatory requirements
• Critically discuss areas for improvement
DISCUSSION – PART B
• Provide a critical review of literature on the regulation changes
• Critically discuss how the chosen bank’s management of the 3 risks
has been influenced by these changes
• Highlight areas for improvement
• Provide examples
CONCLUSION
• Synthesize, not summarize
• Include a brief summary of the essay’s main points but not simply
repeat things
• Show how the points made and the support and examples used fit
together
NOTES FOR THE APPENDIX
• All calculations and explanations of how these are done should be
included
• Additional discussions on the strengths and weaknesses of the
employed models can be covered
• Assumptions made when using the models should be elaborated and
justified
• Although this does not contribute to the word count, the quality of
this section will contribute to that of your discussion in the main
body!!!
FINAL NOTES
• Ensure that the essay is adequately referenced
• Use references from top finance and accounting journals
• Reference to documents of BIS and Basel III
• Be careful with the word count (can be +/- 10%)
• Not included the reference list and the appendix
