The purpose of this task is to get you thinking about the field placement as a total experience and what you will be taking away with you. It is designed to allow you to explore what you learnt throughout the field placement experience. This may also assist you to prepare for job applications and how you might articulate your learning at interviews. A core aspect of social work is the ability to review and reflect on our own practice and professionalism, and also to be able to articulate it in writing and verbally.

Task: In preparation for the assignment, review the learning you experienced across both your field placements, where you started at your first placement and how you have developed as you complete your final placement.

Your assignment should include:

  • A discussion of the aspects of placement and practice that have most benefitted you over the course of your MSW program.
  • A discussion of the aspects of placement and practice that you have found most challenging over the course of your MSW program.
  • A summary of the knowledge and skills you have developed in relation to each practice standard, which are transferable to your future practice as a social worker. Remember this is an academic paper and it needs to be referenced appropriately, including the AASW Practice Standards (2013) and the Code of Ethics (2010).
  • A discussion of how your professional social work identity has developed over the course of your MSW program. This may include how you have shifted your views about the nature of Social Work, how your perspectives have been challenged and how your practice has changed.
