data sets collected at Maroubra beach

The third practical report has two sections.
Presentation of results from one of the data sets collected at Maroubra beach and the data on the
spatial distribution of ibis at UNSW in a format appropriate for the Results section in a scientific paper.
You do not need to produce the Introduction, Methods and Discussion sections that would normally
accompany the Results section in a full paper. You will be producing just the Results sections, for two
separate analyses.
For each, your Results section needs to include three components:
• a written description of your findings,
• figures that visualise those results (with figure legends)
• the details of statistical tests that support the conclusions you made in the text (either in text,
or in tables with appropriate table legends).
PART 1.
1A). Gastropod abundance vs. height on the shore
• The analyses for this question were done in the second linear models practical.
• You can select just one of the three species of snails for this analysis.
1B). Gastropod abundance vs. species and height on the shore
• The analysis required for this question was done in the third linear models practical.
1C). Species composition in rockpools
• The figures and analysis for this question were done in both multivariate practicals.Your
results section needs to include three components:
• a written description of your findings,
• a figure that visualises those results (with figure legend)
• the details of statistical tests that support the conclusions you made in the text (either
incorporated into the text, or in a table with an appropriate table legend).
The Communicating Results practical (Week 8) provides examples of how statistical tests are
incorporated into results sections in scientific papers and further guidance on the best ways to present
statistical tests.
PART 2.
2). Analysing ibis spatial distributions
• The analyses required for this question were done in the first spatial analysis practical. Your
results section should include:
• The figures you made
• Text describing those figures
• Text that includes answers the following questions that you were asked in the practical:
• Q6. What proportion of ibis were located within ~15m (approx 0.000138 decimal degrees)
from a road or path line feature.
• Q7. What proportion of ibis are located near roads (select only “road” in the “type” column )?
How does this compare to the proportion of ibis located near to “path” line features only?
• Q8. Are a smaller or larger proportion of feeding ibis located near buildings or roads (both
“road” and “path” under the “type” column) compared to all ibis?
All four parts are equally weighted. You should not need more than half a page of text (not including
figures and tables) for each question.
Given that you should all have the same numerical results, reports will be marked satisfactory when
there are effective explanations of the results obtained, text that indicates a thorough understanding of
the hypotheses being tested, and effective use of figures to communicate the main results.
