Learning Moment 1: Language barrier solved through body language.

In the past, I worked for Coca Cola as a merchandiser in Hamilton. Through this job, I would travel to many different groceries stores to stock up shelves and ensure Coca Cola displays were presented well. Through this, I had to interact with many different people including workers and also customers. One day, I was approached by a lady who I believed was from Southern Asia. She had little to none knowledge of the English language and so she used her body language with the minimal English she knew to explain to me the products that she was after. Through her body language I was able to find the products she needed. This created a learning moment for myself, as I realized that through the use of body language (hand gestures and movement) we were able to communicate with each other to solve the problem of our language barrier. This strengthens the saying that body language is just as important as to what is being said.

Learning moment 2 – Greeting people

While working for a popular resort I was exposed to many cultures daily. Being front of house I had to learn how to greet a wide range of people with little knowledge of who they were or where they are from. I was always taught to remain professional and maintain etiquette behaviour as many cultures respect this. Avoiding slang and learning to speak proper helped with language barriers. I learned that not every encounter has to be verbal, occasionally body language and hand signals were a form of communication that worked well. The customers I had that could see the effort I put in to understanding them and communicating effectively to get the booking through. I noticed dealing with customers from westernised countries the communication tended to be less formal. Interactions from those from a high context culture tended to be more formal.
