GROUP PRESENTATION
You will be assigned a scientific paper that has been recently published in the field
of genetics. You will give a 10 minutes + 5 minutes for questions oral presentation
on this paper.
Each student will be assigned to a small group of 3-4 students. The group will
prepare a talk based on a topic set for them, which will require some
research/planning/preparation. There will be two/three papers presented per session,
which will be held towards the end of semester.
You should aim to speak uninterrupted for about 10 minutes then have about 5
minutes of questions and discussion. Below is a brief guide on how to structure the
presentation. You will get more advice on how to do this task during the lectures.
Start by stating the title and the name of the authors (first author will do in
the case of many authors).
Then outline the scientific question being addressed by the research in the
paper.
Give background to the research i.e. cover the relevant material in the
introduction of the paper and any further background that is necessary to
communicate the science to your peers,
Methods and Results: These may be together or separate depending on the
paper and the way you decide to present it. In most cases it will be
appropriate to present all the figures and tables in the paper and explain them
carefully. Some papers refer to “supplementary material” and you may
choose to present some of that (To access these you need to go through the
University library to access the online version of the journal article).
Cover the material in the discussion of the paper.
You should finish with some of your own thoughts on the science and the
paper.
Finally, you will receive questions from other students, the academic and any
others in attendance. To cover for the possibility that you don’t get many
questions, you might want to come with your own question, relating to the
paper, to ask the audience.
To get full value from these group learning sessions you should read the 2-3 papers
that are being presented each lecture before attending the class. Then you should try
to participate actively during the discussion of other peoples’ papers. Don’t be afraid
to ask questions about something that confused you in the paper or the presentation.

Seek clarification for methods or results that you didn’t understand. Feel free to state
an opinion on the quality of the research or the value of the research question. To
encourage participation, we may nominate you as a ‘questioner’ for a particular
paper.
Meet with the group regularly
These papers can be difficult to understand and you will probably benefit by
discussing this paper with each other before presenting it. So we encourage you all
to carefully read the paper, do extra reading to try to understand the paper, and then
to get together and talk about the paper. A list containing the paper titles and the
students presenting these papers will be provided to you. Once you have spoken to
others presenting the same paper you can also ask your lecturers any questions you
have about the paper.
Oral presentations are worth 15% and will be marked with the following criteria in
mind.
Characteristics we look for in a good seminar:
1. Introduction Informative, appropriate, right length.
| 2. Spoke clearly to the audience | Frequently faced the audience, words were spoken clearly. |
3. Reliance on notes: Minimal reliance on notes, reading from
slides.
4. Knew the topic: Speaker was well prepared.
5. Made topic interesting: Topic was made interesting.
6. Visual aids: Appropriate use of good slides, graphs,
pictures, tables.
| 7. Level of analysis/synthesis: | Difficult topic analyzed or diverse topics synthesized. |
8. Overall presentation: Organization and presentation clear,
logical, easy to understand
9. Length of presentation: About 10 minutes, plus time for questions.
| 10. Responses to questions: | Speaker understood the subject and could answer questions. |
