Context:
Tourists travel for a myriad of reasons – to relax, to visiting family and friends and to experience other
cultures. A core product of the tourist experience lies the destination. Alike a feasibility study,
conducting a destination analysis proves a significant step in determining a touristic potential of a
given destination.
This assessment will help you to understand and apply key aspects of critique by analysing a
destination’s core tourism products, tourist profiles, economic impacts, current issues, tourism policies,
governing bodies and associations, industry stakeholders and local community involvement.
This assessment is a key strategic plan for those who are implementing it, facilitating government
bodies in developing policies and practices, assists stakeholders in the conceptualization of their visions
outlining the actions needed to achieve these goals, enabling destination managers and development
projects plan for sustainable tourism development.
Instructions:
For this assessment, you will prepare a destination analysis poster as if you were a destination
management team on a destination of your group’s choosing. You will need to prepare a poster
presentation, analysing the following criteria and developing recommendations where appropriate.
Discussions in your 2 x A3-sized Destination Analysis Poster must include the following details:

o The pull factors – Key product offerings and destination branding and image
o Economic importance of the tourism industry
o Make-up of the hotel sector
• Destination cycle utilizing the Butler Model – Where does the destination currently stand in
