Overview
The purpose of this assignment is to investigate a dataset which will enable you to answer questions posed in a Memorandum
(see Memorandum section below). In order to answer the memorandum questions, you’ll need to analyse a given dataset,
interpret the results, and then draw appropriate conclusions.
The aims of the assignment are to:
• provide you with some examples of the application of data analysis within an organisation
• test your understanding of the material in the relevant topics
• test your ability to analyse and interpret your results
• test your ability to effectively communicate the results of your analysis toothers
Before attempting the assignment, make sure you have prepared yourself well. At a minimum, please read the relevant sections
of the prescribed textbook and review the materials provided in Modules 1 and 2.

Scenario
You play the role of Sandy Stedwell, Data Analyst in SuperPart’s Research and Analysis Department and you have
been asked to respond to a Memorandum from Hannah Zhou, the Vice‐President of Human Resources at SuperPart Industries.
Hannah has written to you regarding certain matters relating to the employee satisfaction survey. To assist you in answering
Hannah’s questions, she has provided you with a dataset called SuperPart2017.xlsx. SuperPart Industries is a fictitious
automobile parts manufacturer with 9800 employees and it bears no resemblance to any existing organisation. All data in the
dataset is fictitious.
SuperPart wishes to study its full‐time workforce by developing an employee profile that measures factors such as income, job
satisfaction and career progress. A survey of a random sample of 400 staff was conducted via inter‐office mail. The
questionnaire used for the survey can be found in the SuperPart2017.xlsx file. To understand what each variable means,
please cross‐reference to the questionnaire given in the excel file.
The specific questions Hannah has for Sandy are in the following memorandum.

Dear Sandy,
At the last Executive meeting, I was most interested to hear that the data your division recently collected from a random
sample of 400 of our employees is now in a convenient database, and ready for analysis. I have a number of interests to be
addressed, in order to construct a profile of our employees and to assist in Human Resources matters. These are as follows:
1. An overall view of an employee’s age at SuperPart
I am interested in the age demographics of our employees. There are various reasons for this. One is to predict the potential
retirement rate, as this impacts on our superannuation funding and skill base, as people retire and leave the company.
Another is to establish if SuperPart is attracting enough younger workers, while another is to see if the spread of ages allows
for people progressing through the stages of middle management. Accordingly, a general summary of age, of all our
employees, is required, for presentation at the next Executivemeeting.
2. Exploring Associations
I am also interested in how age relates to some specific factors for our employees. In particular, does there appear to be
any relationship between an employee’s age and:
(a) Occupation within SuperPart
(b) The number of hours worked
(c) Before‐taxes Income
On the basis of the above, provide a brief summary how the factors compare.
3. Differences in levels of job satisfaction
Since the introduction of the national government’s new Industrial Relations laws, the Executive is particularly concerned
about the level of contentment and discontentment of our employees.
(a) Can you please provide a summary report on worker satisfaction atSuperPart?
(b) Is there any difference in the level of job satisfaction and union or non‐union membership? (I am interested in
those employees who say they are satisfied in some way or other with theirjobs.)
(c) Are there are any differences in hours worked based on job satisfaction? Can you provide me with a brief summary
of which employee groups are working the longest hours.

4. Worker Retention
As well as retirement, management is also worried about employees leaving for other reasons. A recent industry‐wide
survey suggested that 10% of employees anticipate leaving the industry in the next 2 years. If this figure is true at
SuperPart, some managers have predicted that the company would lose 1000 or more employees. Are you able to work
out the chances of this occurring?
5. Union Memberships
You may not be aware, but union membership at SuperPart has never been high. Nonetheless, in the last enterprise
bargaining agreement we agreed with the unions that a range of issues such as work hours and job satisfaction would
be investigated for all employees. To assist in this goal, and to analyse the extent and role of unionisation in the
company, I would like information on the features mentioned below.
(a) What is the estimated average working week for all SuperPart employees? What is the estimated average
working week for union members? For non‐union members?
(b) Can you provide me with an accurate estimate of the total number of non‐union members across the
whole organization who would work more than 40 hours? Likewise, how many are working more than 50
hours?
(c) There is some speculation that the non‐unionised workers work on average more than 45 hours per week. Is
there any way of confirming this?
(d) A recent survey of manufacturers showed that the proportion of unionised staff nationally was at least 20%. I
suspect that SuperPart would be on the ‘low‐unionised’ side, compared to the country overall. Am I correct in
saying that the union is wrong and their membership is below 20%?
6. Future Surveys
One of the company’s overall goals is to reduce the average working week and increase the level of job satisfaction.
Next year, we intend to perform a follow‐up study on these variables in particular. Say we wished to estimate the
average working week for all employees to within one hour and the proportion of satisfied workers for the whole
company to within 1%, will a sample size of 400 be large enough?

Requirements
• Your report should be no longer than 2000 words and there is no need to include, Charts and Tables, or Appendices
in the report
• Your Charts/Graphics and Tables are only to be placed in the Data Analysis file i.e. the Excel spreadsheet
• The report is to be written as a stand‐alone document (assume Hannah will only read your report). Thus, you should not
have any references in the report to your data analysis output. Eg. “According to Table 1 in the analysis …”
• Your report must contain an introduction/executive summary that explains in plain language what the report is for and
summarises the main findings. The introduction should be no more than 2/3 page
• The body of your report must be set out in the same order as in the originating memorandum from Hannah, with each
section (question) clearly marked
• Use plain language and your explanations succinct. Avoid the use of technical or statistical jargon as Hannah will not
necessarily understand even simple statistical terms. As a guide to the meaning of “Plain Language”, imagine you are
explaining your findings to a person without any statistical training (e.g. someone who has not studied this unit). What type
of language would you use in this case?
• Marks will be lost if you use unexplained technical terms, irrelevant material, or have poor presentation/organization
• All Microsoft Excel data analysis output associated with each question in the Memorandum is to be placed in the
corresponding tab in the file SuperPart2017.xlsx

Data Analysis Instructions/Guidelines
• In order to prepare a reply to Hannah’s memorandum, you will need to examine and analyse the dataset
SuperPart2017.xlsx thoroughly.
• Hannah has asked a number of questions and your Data Analysis output (i.e. your charts, tables, graphs etc.) should be
structured such that each question is answered on the separate tab/worksheet provided in your Excel document. There are
also two extra tabs in SuperPart2017.xlsx called CI and HT and you should use the various templates contained in these tabs
in your “Confidence Interval” and “Hypothesis” answers.
• In order to effectively answer the questions, your Data Analysis output needs to be appropriate. Accordingly, you’ll need to
establish which of the following techniques are applicable for eachquestion:
o Summary Measures (e.g. Descriptive Statistics, Inc. Outlierdetection)
o Comparative Summary Measures (i.e. Descriptive Statistics for multiple levels of a variable)
o Suitable tables and charts or graphics (Topics 2 and 3) that will illustrate more clearly, other important features of a
variable
o Cross Tabulations (sometimes called Contingency Tables), used to establish the relationships (dependencies) between
two variables (see Additional Materials under Topic 3 – creating Cross Tabulations in Excel using Pivot Tables)
o Confidence Intervals: You can assume that a 95% confidence level is appropriate. We use Confidence Intervals when
we have no idea about the population parameter we are investigating. Additionally, we would use Confidence Intervals
if we are asked to provide an estimate. You can use the relevant Excel template provided in the dataset and copy to
the applicable question tab
o Hypothesis Tests: You can assume that a 5% level of significance is appropriate. We Use Hypothesis Tests when we
are testing a Claim, a Theory or a Standard. You can use the relevant Excel template provided in the dataset and then
copy to the applicable question tab
Note: There is an Appendix at the end of each Chapter of the Prescribed Textbook which describes the basic Excel steps associated
with that Topic. Chapters 1 to 9 are applicable for this assessment.
Submission
Your completed assignment should be in two separate files:
• Data Analysis (Part A): An Excel document (i.e. the SuperPart2017.xlsx file) containing separate tabs/ worksheets
with charts/ tables/ graphs for each question
• Report (Part B): A Word document of no more than 2000 words which is not to contain any charts/ tables/ graphs
• All interpretations should be presented in your “Report” and the excel document should only contain your intermediate
analysis and final output
The assignment is to be submitted to the MIS770 assignment two dropbox in Deakin’s Cloud Campus before 8am on Thursday
21st September 2017. Note: The Cloud Unit site is the ONLY method of submission acceptable.
Please name/rename each file using the format: yourstudentid.docx and yourstudentid.xlsx
When you are required to submit an assignment through your CloudDeakin unit site, you will receive an email to your Deakin
email address confirming that it has been submitted. You should check that you can see your assignment in the Submissions
view of the Assignment dropbox folder after upload, and check for, and keep, the email receipt for the submission.
If you need to request an extension, please email the Unit Chair (lasitha@deakin.edu.au) by no later than Monday 18th

Notes:
Penalties for late submission: The following marking penalties will apply if you submit an assessment task after the due date
without an approved extension:
• 5% will be deducted from available marks for each day up to five days, and work that is submitted more than five days
after the due date will not be marked. You will receive 0% for the task. ‘Day’ means working day for paper submissions
and calendar day for electronic submissions.
• The Unit Chair may refuse to accept a late submission where it is unreasonable or impracticable to assess the task after
the due date.

Building evidence of your experiences, skills and knowledge (Portfolio)‐ Building a portfolio that evidences your skills,
knowledge and experience will provide you with a valuable tool to help you prepare for interviews and to showcase to potential
employers. There are a number of tools that you can use to build a portfolio. You are provided with cloud space through
OneDrive, or through the Portfolio tool in the Cloud Unit Site, but you can use any storage repository system that you like.
Remember that a Portfolio is YOUR tool. You should be able to store your assessment work, reflections, achievements and
artefacts in YOUR Portfolio. Once you have completed this assessment piece, add it to your personal Portfolio to use and
showcase your learning later, when applying for jobs, or further studies. Curate your work by adding meaningful tags to your
artefacts that describe what the artefact represents.
