The Authors Assad and Omer wrote a 10 page paper on manufacturing firms information technology capability (ITC) and the role it plays in creating a competitive advantage for firms. The authors cited 119 other works which were dated (late 1990’s to early 2000’s). The citations supported the notion that well defined and planned IT architecture, IT infrastructure, and IT resources can give a competitive advantage to their respective organizations. The paper supports the notion that information technology capabilities give firms significant competitive advantages and the authors support this idea by contrasting ITC to Organizational Culture.

The author Ezell makes a compelling argument in this 11 page paper for the need for all countries to have a strong manufacturing base. This article focuses on the decline of US manufacturing over the past 15 years and compares this trend to how other countries manufacturing sectors have performed. Once the author made his case for the need for manufacturing, he transitioned to the new face of manufacturing and how innovation is the key driver for modern manufacturing. Technology infusion such nanotechnology or advanced materials is covered and the need to inject high tech into historically low to medium technology industries is a competitive advantage.
In addition this author also authored another paper which is an in-depth look at the need for a US national manufacturing strategy. http://www.itif.org/files/2011-national-manufacturing-strategy.pdf
This paper focuses on three questions:
- Does the US need a healthy manufacturing sector?
- How healthy is the manufacturing sector today & in the future?
- Is there a need for a national manufacturing strategy?
A reference to note is the “Ease of Doing Business Index” by the world bank: http://www.doingbusiness.org/rankings
Overall, the conclusion the author makes is that investment in technology is the way to stay competitive in a global manufacturing market.
