Identify and analyze Prinz’s best one or two arguments defending cultural relativism. Does it or do they succeed?
1) Students are required to write a 1,200-word essay responding to the above prompt.
2) You want to state a clear thesis that directly addresses the prompt.
3) More of your essay should be analysis rather than summary. What are good strong reasons to support your thesis?
4) If you agree with the author you are writing about, you need to expand on what they say – you can’t just summarize it. The main way to do this is by raising and responding to potential objections that someone else might raise to the position of the author. Consider several different objections!
5) If you disagree with the author you are writing about, you should raise objections to their position. But you should also consider ways in which the author might respond to your objections. Say something like “Mill might try to respond to this objection by arguing that…” Then you should further clarify why the author’s response would still fail.
6) Make sure you express your thesis using your own voice. Your voice should not be identical to the person that you are writing about, even if you agree them. Again, starting your thesis with “I will argue that” can be helpful. If you agree with the author, state in your own voice why you agree with the author. You can say something like “I agree with Mill because he can respond to several important objections to his position, including…”
7) Come up with examples to support your claims.
