Report : Partial research report
Writing up psychological experiments in the for of a ‘research report’ . (APA)
In the Introduction to the report you will justify research aims, research methods, and specific hypotheses, using theories and previous research from the scientific literature.
In the Discussion section you will interpret results, re-evaluate key issues from the Introduction in light of the results, and make suggestions for future research. To do this effectively, you will learn about data collation, elemen- tary statistical analysis, appropriate referencing techniques, and application of APA publication rules.
Length/Duration: 900 words excluding the Method, Results and the reference list. So that you can focus y- our efforts on justifying the research and interpreting the results, you will be provided with a complete Method section and Results section. These must be included in your report.
You will need to write the remaining sections (Title, Abstract, Introduction, Discussion, References). The word count INCLUDES the Abstract (but NOT the Reference List) and you must not exceed 1500 words for the Abstract, Introduction, and Discussion combined. There is no ’10% rule’ over the word limit. The research report should be double spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font, with 2.5 cm margins all around
To examine the effect of self affirmation on well-being
Two questions this research attempts to answer: Does self affirmation increase hedonic well-being? Does self affirmation increase eudaimonic well-being?
What is the aim of the experiment?
Identify the independent and dependant variables of the study.
What is the anticipated hypotheses?
Your anticipated hypothesis is based on the previous findings that you have read in the literature. Knowing that you still need to read the literature, what prediction could you make between the IV and the DV?
Last paragraph of the introduction includes:
- Statement of the aim (i.e. it aims to answer the question from the previous paragraph)
- Statement of IV and DV (suggest you explicitly say “The independent variable is…” and “The dependent variable is…”)
- Statement of hypotheses, which must include the IV and the DV in the statement.
Unfortunately, research reports do not necessarily have an “essay/literature review question” – or so to speak – instead there is an aim.
