Individual essay overview

The individual essay is comprised of two parts: A and B. Part A is the strategy paper. Part B is the reflection. Both parts are worth 100% and must be submitted as one piece of coursework.

Part A: Strategy Paper

Drawing on the business simulation activity you have been managing your company for at least 5 years. You are now reviewing and presenting your future plans for the company. You are required to evaluate the success of your strategy and make recommendations for future plans. You are required to prepare and carry out a Board 5-year strategy review presentation to the shareholders. 

Part A Strategy Paper should cover the following points each of which bears a credit:

  • Key messages Part A should include:
    1. Vision and strategy (e.g. vision, values, mission, HR, culture) (20%) 
    2. Review of each year’s progress including (20%)
  • Competitor analysis: Porter’s five forces; Market share; product/ price analysis; competitors; competencies and capabilities 
  • Performance results

Performance analysis (evaluation of strategy, decisions – Marketing / HR/ Logistics / Accounting / Product development / Event response etc)

  • Future plans and recommendations (10%) (key decisions for next 5 years, identify any changes to current strategy, why and how achieve; recommendations – based on your performance and analysis, potential growth – internationalisation/ diversification or acquisition)

Further details concerning Part A Strategy Paper: 

Performance Review: 

  • Assess the success of the strategy or strategies compared to industry conditions and competitors. 
  • Analyse company performance e.g. comparing actual performance with targets in Business Plan, financial data analysis, decision analysis and justification of performance measures and strategy, application of business scorecard etc.  

Performance analysis further details: 

  • Explain why business plan achieved/ missed, why performance better/worse than competitors 
  • Explain differences from competitors/ industry 
  • Explain any changes made to business plan and company, why, any impact. 

Part B: Reflection

Your annual Performance Development Review is approaching. You are keen to reflect on how working in the team compares to what you have learnt on your previous MBA course and your understanding of how companies perform in your industry. You are required to prepare a report that covers research into one or two events in your simulation team. 

This should cover: 

  • Executive summary 
  • Introduction
  • Identified events
  • Review of relevant theory / theories / concepts
  • Review of industry practices
  • Application of theory and practices
  • Discussion
  • Recommendations for practice and research

Submission procedure:

Your individual report should be prepared as explained in the assessment and uploaded to the appropriate Turnitin link available on the module’s Moodle site. A cover page, which will be provided on the module’s Moodle site, should be included as part of the submission.

Written feedback will be provided via Turnitin within 15 working days of submission.

1.2Structure and presentation

Your work should be word processed in accordance with the following:

Font size 12, using a sans serif font such as Arial or similar

1.5 line spacing

The page orientation should be ‘portrait’ (large diagrams and tables can be in landscape orientation if that enables them to fit on fewer pages)

Margins on both sides of the page should be no less than 2 cm

Pages should be numbered

Yournameshould notappear onthescript

Your student number should be included on every page.

1.4Re-assessment work

You will need to retrieve this module if you fail to achieve 50% for this assessment

To re-sit your individual essay you should submit a brand new submission. Just improving your originally-submitted essay will not be sufficient.

We strongly suggest that you try to submit all coursework by the deadline set as meeting deadlines is expected in employment. However, in our regulations, UEL has permitted students to be able to submit their coursework up to 24 hours after the deadline. Coursework which is submitted late, but within 24 hours of the deadline, will be assessed but subject to a fixed penalty.

The impact of the fixed penalty on your result will depend what level of study you are in and when you began your course at UEL. Please note that if you submit twice, once before the deadline and once during the 24 hour late period, then the second submission will be marked and the fixed penalty applied.

This rule only applies to coursework. It does not apply to examinations, presentations, performances, practical assessments or viva voce examinations. If you miss these for a genuine reason, then you will need to apply for extenuating circumstances, or accept that you will receive a zero mark.

1.5Guidance on referencing

You have been asked to prepare a coursework comprised of two parts – Part A: Strategy Paper and Part B: Reflection – and if needed will need to reference any relevant sources in the essay.

As a student, you will be taught how to write correctly referenced essays using UEL’s standard Harvard referencing system from Cite Them Right. Cite Them Right is the standard Harvard referencing style at UEL for all Schools apart from the School of Psychology which uses the APA system.

The electronic version of Cite Them Right: The Essential Referencing Guide (11th edition), can be accessed whilst on or off campus via UEL the link below and will teach you all you need to know about Harvard referencing, plagiarism and collusion. The book can only be read online and no part of it can be printed nor downloaded.

1.6Submission of assessments

  • Notice is hereby given that all the coursework for this Module must be submitted to Turnitin. If you fail to submit to Turnitin, in accordance with the guidance provided on the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle), a mark of 0 will be awarded.

Submitting Assessments Using Turnitin:

Turnitin is required for coursework assessments, such as report/research papers or projects in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and in PDF format. There are two main reasons we want you to use Turnitin:

  • Turnitin can help you avoid academic breaches and plagiarism. When you use Turnitin before a submission deadline, you can use the Originality Report feature to compare your work to thousands of other sources (such as websites, Wikipedia, and even other student papers). Anything in your work that identically matches another source is highlighted for you to see. When you use this feature before the deadline, you will have time to revise your work to avoid an instance of academic breach/plagiarism.
  • Turnitin saves paper. When using Turnitin to electronically submit your work, you will almost never have to submit a paper copy.

Late Submissions Using Turnitin

UEL has permitted students to be able to submit their coursework up to 24 hours after the deadline. Assessments that are submitted up to 24 hours late are still marked, but with a deduction in marks (see above). However, you have to be very careful when you are submitting your assessment. If you submit your work twice, once using the original deadline link and then again using the late submission link on Turnitin, your assignment will be graded as late.

Turnitin System Failure

Best advice: Don’t wait until the last minute to submit your assessments electronically. If you experience a problem submitting your work with Turnitin, you should notify your lecturer/tutor by email immediately. However, deadlines are not extended unless there is a significant systems problem with Turnitin. UEL has specific plans in place to address these issues. If UEL finds that the issue with the system was significant, you will receive an email notifying you of the issue and that you have been given a 24 hour extension. If you don’t receive any email that specifically states you have been given an extension, then the original deadline has not been changed.
