Methods

Participants

A total of 245 (178 females and 67 males) undergraduate Psychology students from the University of Western Sydney whose enrolled in Perception unit this autumn. They participated in the study of visual human bodies crowding as a part of their assignment task requirement. However, participant ages did not mentioned in this experiment. This experiment aims to examine how human vision can identify the specific object through a deferent manipulation for instance, how human vision has the ability to choose a right body at a visual crowding. The week 4 tutorial slide notes would use as guidance to complete this report step by step.

Design

Independent variable embodied in this study where target body without distractors enable people to quickly identify target stimuli. In addition, an inverted distractors and upright distractors, it has been innovated in the way testing participants to recognise the target body with difficulty.

Dependent variable appeared to be no different, because each participant has given the same study of visual body crowding. The number of trials and the time that target body displayed on the screen everyone recorded exactly the same

Stimuli/ Materials

The study was conducted using prior movie file recorded it was for the human body stimuli displays using a software called Daz 3D 85 / 125 pixels the target bodies based just 362 pixels away whether the right or left side from the centred dot point in the middle of screen. Whereas, the distractor images entirely surround the target bodies. Moreover, this experiment performed using Dell LCD computer monitor 60Hz, pixel resolution =1024 / 768 Dell PC.

The task has given for the participants to watch over the pre-recorded movie and observe carefully on the dot point in the middle of the monitor screen and then determine whether they see a fat or slim body. The body stimuli were randomly appear and dis appear on the screen. The responses were recorded on the provided data entry sheet using a pen. The study contained of 120 trials per participant in a randomised order. The goal of the trials was to distinguish the type of target body that displays on every trial. Furthermore, the thin body weight target indicated as = “0” however the heaviest one represented as =”1”.

Procedure

The participants were instructed to observe through the nominated of body crowding movie which contains 120 trials per participants to decide what they see on the screen. The trials included three body conditions; slim weighs equivalents two per cent, the medium volume twenty one per cent and the fat that weighs forty per cent. Therefore, during the performance participants were encouraged to keep focusing on the centre of dot point at the moment of stimuli appear on the screen, so the goal was to differentiate the target body before it has temporary disappeared. Then the result must be collected on the data sheet each time. This action goes for 120 trials per participant.

Moreover, there were two distractors and one with no distractor conditions of human body stimuli continued to display on the screen for duration of 200 milli second each time through the trials on the movie. First condition was a target body alone, the second was a target body inverted distractor and the third target shows up righted distractor. The reason for having distractors might be to test participants in a quick decision making on what actually has seen.
