Credibility
21
Include page numbers for all sources.
• You must show that you are a credible communicator.
• Use sources that are credible, relevant and timely.
• No blogs
• Other student’s thesis papers
• Reference list must match in-text citations.
• Do not misinterpret, misquote, misrepresent the source or take it out of context.
• Be specific –citations too general can be a form of distortion = plagiarism
• Pay attention to:
• incorporating your sources (direct and indirect quotes)
• verbs/phrases to introduce your quotes
22
DisCtoortimonm or oStnre tcphrinog bofl ethme Fasc t=s plagiarism
• using misinformation or exaggerated and/or imprecise language to
describe an author’s research outcomes.
Making a claim or generalisation
• e.g. The author states there are a lot of problems with virtual teams.
You can only make a broad declarative statement if it is clearly supported
and linked to evidence from your source.
You need to show your reader that you understand exactly what an author
is saying in the original text.
23
The most common forms of plagiarism we see:
• No sources
• copying word for word from a source and NOT citing the source
• copying someone else’s ideas and changing them into your own words and NOT citing the source
• patch working (taking bits and pieces) from other sources so that it looks like your work and NOT
citing the sources
• copying and pasting information from the Internet and NOT citing the source
• paraphrasing someone’s writing so that it is only slightly different from the original writing (sham
paraphrasing) even if you cite the source
• copying and submitting part of or the whole of another student’s work (i.e. cheating!)
• submitting work that has been written by another person as your own (i.e. cheating!).
24
A common problem
25
Direct quotes
• Occasionally, you may use direct quotes (the exact words of the author) as
evidence in your writing. It is useful sometimes to use the original words of the
author when those exact words carry special significance. Direct quoting should
not, however, should not be the primary strategy for presenting evidence in your
writing.
• When you use a direct quote, you copy and reference the exact word/s of the
author into your writing. A direct quote may be:
• One word
• A phrase or part of a sentence
• A sentence
• A group of sentences
26
• No more than 10% of the total word count.
• Short quotes only (i.e.<30 words).
For ALL quotes:
• Use the exact words of the author
• Make sure your quotation blends with the sentence
• No lonely quotes: You MUST use reporting words or phrases to integrate/introduce
the quote into your writing
• Never start a sentence with the quote
• Reference your source of information with author, date and page or paragraph
number
• Use double quotation marks ‘…’
27
Don’t do this!
• Don’t just dump quoted information into your paragraph. Blend the
words of the author with your own words.
• Don’t use too many direct quotes in your writing (e.g. 4-5 short
quotes is enough in a 2000 word essay). The lecturers prefer to see
paraphrasing – writing quotes in your own words.
• Don’t change a couple of words from a direct quote and think that it is
a paraphrase – either use the exact words or change the words of the
author significantly so that it is a correct paraphrase.

What sources can be considered as credible?
• materials timely to the topic (for example, social media is a
fast developing subject, therefore currency is crucial);
• research articles written by respected and well-known
authors;
• websites registered by government and educational
institutions (.gov, .edu, .ac);
• academic databases (i.e. Academic Search Premier or
JSTOR).
29
Sources to avoid
• out-of-date materials (even an article published five years ago on social media, for
example, may not be timely);
• conference papers, and other students’ theses;
• posts from social networks (i.e. Facebook);
• blogs;
• research articles without citations;
• websites ending in .com, .org, .net etc.
NB! Wikipedia can never be considered as a reliable source of information since it can
be edited by anyone (Therefore it is a non-credible website example). However, it can
be used when you are first trying to understand the topic.
