Computer Lab Assignment 1
1. A square footing 6 m × 6 m, carrying a net pressure of 160 kPa, is located at a
depth of 2.0 m in a deposit of stiff clay 17 m thick, a firm stratum lies
immediately below the clay. Characteristic parameters obtained from
oedometer and triaxial tests for the clay are as follows: the undrained Young’s
| modulus Eu = 55 MPa, mv 0.13m2 / MN, Rocscience software Settle3D, |
sat 20kN / m3 . Using |
(a) Determine the total settlement under the centre of the footing.
(b) Plot the total settlement under the centre of the footing with depth.
(c) Plot the vertical stress profiles under the centre and under the corner points
of the footing with depth, and compare to the analytical solutions.
2. A square footing 3 m × 3 m, carrying a net pressure of 130 kPa, is located at a
depth of 1.2 m in a deep deposit of sand of unit weight 16 kN/m3 and the
water table is being well below ground surface. The variation of the average
cone penetration resistance, qc, with depth measuring from ground level is as
follows:
| Depth (m) |
qc (MPa) |
| 0 ~ 1.2 | 3.2 |
| 1.2 ~ 2.4 | 2.6 |
| 2.4 ~ 3.2 | 5.0 |
| 3.2 ~ 4.8 | 4.0 |
| 4.8 ~ 6.4 | 7.2 |
| 6.4 ~ 10.0 | 12.4 |
Determine the settlement of the footing using Schmertmann’s method using
Settle3D and compare the results with hand calculation results of Q3 in
Assignment 1.
Note:
Settle3D is also available in computer lab T_1.07.
(1) Use relevant graphs to support your results in your report.
(2) Submitting an Excel spreadsheet or Settle3D file only is NOT acceptable,
an appropriate report is required.
