Assignment 1
Consider the development of inclusive education through national policy , international treaties and theoretical perspective , and consider how far the SEND Code of Practice represents a shift in priorities for the education of children and youth people with SEND . Has the shift been towards or away . from the idea of full inclusion for all children , in a system of education supposedly based on the social model of disability ?
Aims and Main ideas essay : Many people throughout the UK and even throughout the world there are children with special needs and The goal of my assignment is to give brief meaning of inclusion with the critical evaluation of definition and discussion by comparing with different writer who wrote about inclusion . “Inclusion refers to a cultural and environment feel of belonging. It can be assessed as the extent to which employees are valued , respected , accepted and encouraged to fully participate in organization.” (Requirements for a Diverse and Inclusive Culture – GALLUP , September 2018) . Moreover , this essay will also explain about the social model of inclusion and what are the barriers faced by students with special needs . Therefore , this topic will also describe about the kinds of policies given by government for inclusive education and what Salamanca Statement states about the special educational needs and how Warnock’s 1978 report is considered to be so important in the history of inclusive education . And what other writer states about the Warnock’s report . Under this discussion the topic will also illustrate what did the national and international documents contribute and ion how inclusive education was enacted in England and what did SEN system and the Code of Practice and contemporary understandings states about the inclusion . Hence , whole topic will provide a clear knowledge on inclusive education and kinds of actions or measures taken by society and government.
Meaning of inclusion : “Inclusion is an educational practice whereby students with special needs are fully integrated into the general education classrooms at a school.”(Inclusion-definition, advantages and barriers-INFORMED , March 2013)
There some of the following definitions on inclusive education by various writers and organization :
- According to (UNESCO , 2009,pp8-9)“a process of addressing and responding to the diversity of needs of all learners through increasing participation in learning , cultures and communities and reducing exclusion within from education . it involves changes and modifications in content , approaches , structures and strategies , with a common vision which covers all children of the appropriate age range and conviction that it is the responsibility of regular system to educate all children.”
- “Inclusive Education is defined as a learning environment that promotes the full personal , academic and professional development of all learners irrespective of race , class , color , gender , disability , sexual preference , learning styles and language.”(NCSNET,1997,South Africa)
- “A principle of inclusion education is that all children belongs at their local school , and all children are able to meaningfully participate and learn at their local school .”(Kearney . A , 2011,p1)
Therefore ; from few definition it is clear that there is no particular definition for inclusive education but it also proves that : Every child has right to learn and acquire quality education without any kind of discrimination and inclusive education also allows learn and grow side by side to benefit all .(Inclusive education – UNICEF)
The Social Model of Disability
“The social model of disability says that disability is caused by the way society is organized rather than by a person’s impairment or difference . It looks at ways of removing barriers that restrict life choices for disabled people .” (Social Model of Disability – SCOPE , August 2014)
The problem is disabling world
- Badly designed buildings
- Poor job prospects
- Isolated families
- Inaccessible transport no parking places
- Discrimination
- Stairs no ramps no lifts
- Special schools
- Few sign language interpreters
Isolating children in order to protect them from outer world only leads to hurt them make them feel dejected . these kinds of children hurt more when they are exposed to painful situation . Even , if “administrators don’t understand the philosophy of inclusion or capabilities of children with down syndrome , it may be difficult to get the structure and procedure in place for inclusive classroom.”( Inclusion-definition, advantages and barriers-INFORMED , March 2013)
