How you will achieve the goal

Career planning

Create a plan that will enhance your development in line with your recommended occupation (not necessarily the job role identified in your job ad). Use the format provided. The first 4 of 5 goals you create have a designated activity focus your answer needs to target. The fifth goal requires you to identify a relevant activity focus that your answer will target within the deadline provided (before completion of your current studies).

Use SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bound) to ensure your plan offers sufficient clarity and detail. Identify goals and opportunities that clearly offer persuasive (to employers in your recommended occupation) and meaningful (to your development in line with your recommended occupation) outcomes.

Goal = the what. What you will achieve that will stretch you beyond your current trajectory. Do not create goals about things you have already done or are already doing. Be as specific as possible when describing what it is you will achieve when you reach the goal. Ensure it is measurable.

Opportunity = the how. How you will achieve the goal. Detail a specific opportunity you could realistically participate in that is likely to result in you achieving the goal before the deadline. Specific details include the name/title of the opportunity, what the opportunity involves that will lead you to achieving your goal, the relevant webpage for the opportunity, how you will measure successful completion of the goal etc.

Deadline = the when. A specific date within the next 3 years by which you will complete your goal.

Rationale (strategic thinking) = the why. Why the goal/opportunity/deadline is optimal for enhancing your development aligned to your recommended occupation in line with the activity focus. Strategic thinking for career planning requires envisioning a desired future and translating that vision into goals or objectives and a sequence of steps to achieve them. It begins with the desired-end and works backward to the current status.1 (WebFinance 2019)

Your rationale needs to include:

  • support from relevant occupational information and/or self-knowledge
  • how participation will persuasively and meaningfully enhance your development aligned to your recommended occupation, and
  • why it represents a realistic opportunity for you to participate in before the deadline.
