Assignment 1: Writing business emails Overview

Objectives:

  • To write a reader-centered business email
  • To revise the email for clarity and conciseness

Task

You are working as an audit associate in an accounting firm. Recently, you have been tasked to liaise with Mr. James, an employee in a client company you are auditing, regarding evidence to support some rather large deductions for business travel. However, this has not been an easy task. Mr. James’ replies to your email requests have been terse, cold, and delayed. This led you to send numerous gentle reminders to Mr. James on the evidence required, which he seems to have largely ignored as he maintains that, ā€œOh, I don’t know about receipts. Just put it down and if and when the inland Revenue Authority of Singapore questions me, I’ll worry about receipts then.ā€In are cent email, Mr. James has reprimanded you for being incompetent in your work.

Write an email of about 250-300 words to Mr. James explaining why you cannot prepare a tax return showing these deductions unless he can provide the receipts. Remember the importance of tact and diplomacy in an awkward situation such as this. Use the proper format, effective organization, and appropriate style. You can include your own details in your email so long as they are consistent with the general storyline above.

Assignment 2: Writing a summary

Objectives:

  • To write a summary to highlight important information about a company prior to an audit engagement
  • To analyze and synthesize information and provide a critical response to the information
  • To revise the summary for clarity, conciseness, and coherence

Task

You are an audit intern at CPA Accounting. Your company has a new client, Sembcorp Industries (SI), which is a leading utility, marine, and urban development group, operating across multiple markets worldwide. It has engaged your company, CPA Accounting, as its auditor.

Your supervisor, Mr. Sun, feels that it is very important to understand a client’s business before CPA Accounting audits any company. He wants you to summarise important information about SI based on pages 2 -7 (ā€œGroup FY2018 Highlightsā€ to ā€œChairman and CEO Statementā€) of the SI Annual Report 2018/19 and/or refer to external sources of information. In your summary, include information on the

  • Nature of the client’s operations
  • The sector in which the client operates
  • The regulatory environment in which the client operates
  • Other external factors currently affecting the client’s business

You also need to identify any particular issues that the audit team needs to look out for during the audit engagement.

Write the summary in not more than 500 words.
