ET7751 Effective EAL Pedagogy
CW2 Assessment Guidance
Essay plan/structure template
This plan is not the only way to produce an effective structure for CW2. If you have an
alternative approach, please book time to meeting with Ratha to discuss. It’s important that
your essay is well-planned and structured before you begin your write-up. So: as much time
and attention should be devoted to this aspect of CW2 as the actual write up.
If you’re content to follow a recommended structure, then read on
Introduction (750 words, approx.)
• What this essay is about. Tell the reader what you’ll be doing in this assignment. Use
forms of words from:
– the assessment requirements for CW2, and
– the learning outcomes that must be demonstrated for the essay
Both can be found in the Module Handbook.
• Set the scene – the UK is an increasingly diversity country, and we see this clearly in the
population changes. Such cultural & ethnic diversity has led to similar trends in school
demographics – and the increasing numbers of EAL pupils in school is one indicator of this.
Cite Vertovec on superdiversity.
• Superdiversity calls for new and particular skills/knowledge that teachers must have in
order to support their pupils for whom English is not their strongest language.
• Recognise that such pupils are learning a new language, and engaging with the curriculum
in that new language. This is a cognitive challenge that must not be underestimated by
schools, teachers and policy-makers. Then link to your EAL pupil.
• Introduce your EAL pupil – keep the description brief, provide only essential information
at this stage. The details can be provided at relevant points in the discussion in the main
body of your essay.
• Tell the reader that you’ll be examining the pedagogy and support for the EAL pupil in the
context of the Lucas & Villegas (2011) framework. Discuss the key points of the framework
– why it’s an effective approach for EAL support. This part of the discussion is a ‘bridge’ to
the main body of CW2, so discuss the framework knowledgeably.
• Go on to tell the reader which specific elements of the framework you’ll be focusing on
particularly in the assignment and why.
Main body of the essay
• Now tell the reader a bit more about the elements of the framework you’ve selected for
consideration, which you’ll be linking to specific information about your pupil.
• You should aim to include between 3 and 4 elements of the Lucas & Villegas framework
for detailed discussion in the main body of your writing
• You’ll be linking – in each section – theory we’ve covered in the module content with the
pupil’s particular circumstances and stage of language and academic learning
• How to discuss an element of the Lucas and Villegas (2011) framework: First – Identify the
element of the framework you have selected. Second – Explain what is signifies, and Third
– demonstrate its relevance to your EAL pupil. Fourth – Link to underlying
theories/concepts from the module content, reading and other references you’ve
identified from your independent study and reading. Fifth – Discuss with reference to the
pupil. Sixth – make recommendations about appropriate practice/classroom interventions
that could support your pupil to even greater progress.
• Repeat the steps for each of the elements of the Lucas and Villegas framework you’ve
selected for consideration in CW2
• Review the Meet and Catch up recording in this Moodle block as it contains particular
advice about how to go about organising your discussion for each element of the
framework you’ve selected
Conclusion
• Briefly summarise the key points you make in the main body of the essay
• Pull together the themes and what you consider to be the most critical issues for
consideration/intervention re: this pupil
• Link back to the introduction and show the reader how (well!) you have demonstrated all
the elements of the assignment as required by the assessment requirements.
• And you’re done..!
• Proof-read
• Check your ref list is in full Harvard – avoid making referencing errors. They’re a very easy
way to gain full marks for refs.
Writing tips
• Check your word count – you have 4k words +/- 10%
• Keep your writing precise and clear – no waffling, pls
• Start by roughly drafting your introduction (don’t finalise yet). Then make a good start on
the main body of your writing. Last (but not least) write up your conclusion. Then go back
to the introduction and finesse it – you’ll find this the most efficient, and effective way of
writing the essay. You’ll make fewer changes to the introduction by this approach, because
you’ll have completed your main body before you finalised the intro.
