Learning Portfolio (20%)

This assessment consists of two parts:

  • 10% for what you did
  • 10% for professional impact statements

This assessment must be created each week during the semester before the final submission in week 13. There would be portfolio in total for the first 10 weeks, from week 1 until week 10. The portfolio is to be continually updated. The revision history will be used to check this has been done.

A sensible minimum length to aim for would be 20 pages.

You should be able to use your portfolio as an important part of a CV when applying for jobs as it should contain both the things you have learnt (such as how to document using Visio, what is the point of Fishbone and Use Case diagrams, and how to start a Visual Studio project) but also reflections on what you have discovered by trying to think as a systems analyst (what are the components of competitive advantage provided by digital technologies, what are some avenues of business value provided by technology?)

Things I did in tutorial (10%):

You will be given an introduction to a wide range of the tools of a business analyst, both software and techniques. These are the tools of a professional and, should you take a major or minor in Information Systems, would be targets for you to study in depth. In this section of the portfolio you should record exactly how to use each tool (how to run the software or what the steps are in the analysis technique). The length of this section will vary depending upon the number of new tools introduced. At the start there will be several each week. The list of required samples is in the template provided. EVERY sample must have your name included somewhere in the screen shot.

Do: have some instruction for every new thing covered in lecture and tutorial. These can include things specific to completing your assignments (like: “an executive summary should be less than a page”. Add notes given to you in your appendices.

Don’t: skip material if you miss a class. It is YOUR responsibility to make up for any missed classes.

Professional Impact (10%):

In this section you should be able to see a progression through the entries as your understanding of the role of the business analyst becomes more educated. Make an entry each week. The comments here should be reflective and personal to you. An entry might say “I noticed that my restaurant was disorganised. If they used … it would save them money. The process flow diagram was hard to draw but seems a sensible way to analyse the business. The Use Cases seem no help at all.” Do not put entries here that you want me to hear like “flow diagrams and use cases are methods of analysis” as this shows no reflection. The section should help you reflect on the value of each part of the subject to your future. It is especially useful to you to think about how the work relates to your possible futures. Good reflection is honest, such as “there is no way I will ever again write a program using VB, it is hard and boring” or “designing user interfaces is fun, I think I might like to do that when I start work. It seems to me that everyone needs to be involved in interface design as that is where we meet customers.”

By the end of the course the entries would be expected to show more global and strategic thinking, which could be based on your own research on the topic the week covered.

DO: make your entries honest. “I did not understand this” with an entry in the following week of “found a good explanation on the internet that told me the common use for this is …” is very impressive. For example, if your major is accounting, I would expect some harsh things being said about the chances of you using programming in your career. The entry MUST be related to YOU personally. Include what was learned but there MUST be a statement of how you might or might not use each piece of learning.

DON’T: trivialise this section. It is the reflection on what is covered in class your understanding of where it all fits that provides the value of the subject as a tool for choosing later studies. Each week contains a number of very complex new ideas. Reflect on the bits you understood and those that were not clear. If your reflection is two lines do not expect a decent mark.

There are minimums for your learning portfolio. You MUST have each section represented for weeks 1-10 AND these features. The minimum inclusions have been placed in the template.

Do not remove or change provided headings.
