Description:
In an argument essay of five to six paragraphs (700-1000 words), summarize and respond to Rifaat’s article
“The Modern City Reinvented.” Develop an argument with supporting claims and examples that answers one
of the questions that will be visible when you open the Argument Essay assignment on June 2 or 3. You will
type your essay directly into the text box there. Your essay should include one paragraph that summarizes
the argument and central components of the model articulated in Rifaat’s essay. Aside from referring to the
ideas in Rifaat’s essay, you may use your own opinion and draw on examples from your own experience as
evidence for your claims. You are welcome to refer to your copy of “The Modern City Reinvented,” your notes
on the article, and your draft summary of the article. No additional research or outside sources are permitted for
this assignment. Note: Underline your thesis statement.
Evaluation:
Your essay will be evaluated on its successful execution of summary strategies (those articulated in the In-Class
Summary assignment description); effective thesis statement and argument formation; and organization,
grammar, and punctuation.
