1. Project Outline

This project constitutes 45% of the overall assessment for the module. Learners will write a proposal for the requirement given using knowledge on warehouse operations and management. The learners will submit an individual typewritten report including any supporting appendices on their analysis and findings.

2. Learning Outcomes

After the completion of this project, the learners will be able to:

(i) Explain and apply the concepts of warehouse operations and management.
(ii) Recommend changes to the warehouse operations to cope with new development in the operational requirements.

3. Requirements

The company is a ship supply company that provides supplies and services to vessels that are in or passing through Singapore. The warehouse operation has been based on cross-docking all these years. Only 20% of the purchases are for their own stock, with a maximum storage of one month. Their current warehouse is 50,000 square feet. The warehouse is divided into the following usage. With the current pallet storage space being 50% full at any one time.

Receiving is about 7,200-line items per day for which 20% is for stock and the rest are cross-dock. Out of the 7,200-line items, 30% are food items and 70% non-food items.

Picking and Packing operations. To fulfill an order, the picking and packing is 30% from the stock and 70% of the items received. Each person can pick up to 350-line items per hour.

Delivery per day is on average of 20 orders at 6 pallets each, with the combination of food items at 2 pallets and Non-food items at 4 pallets. Each order has an average of 300-line items and 50-line items packed in one pallet.

The warehouse has a staff strength of 21 and they work from 0800H to 1800H daily. With this strength, they are able to receive 7,200-line items, tally, and check, put away 20% of the items and pick & pack the required 20 orders per day.

With the outbreak of COVID-19, the situation changed. The percentage of stock items needs to increase from 20% to 50%. The staff headcount has been reduced from 21 to 15, as 6 staffs were unable to return to the work due to COVID-19 measures.
