What is Diversity?
The mix of peoples’
different attributes and
backgrounds (i.e. race,
ethnicity, gender, age,
disability, sexual
orientation, religion).
What is Inclusion?
Pro-active behaviours,
options and actions to
make people from all
backgrounds, ages and
abilities feel welcome,
respected and that they
belong.
Diversity is the mix of people, inclusion is trying to
get this mix to all work together in harmony.

This image is a useful way to think about
the difference between equality and
equity.
• Equality refers to treating everyone
the same way – in essence it is
about fairness – but only works if
everyone has started from the same
level playing field
• Equity refers to understanding
people’s needs and providing them
specific resources or environments
for them to achieve success

This diagram provides a useful way of categorising
how we approach inclusion in our society:
• Exclusion – we have diversity, and treat everyone
equally – this means people that don’t fit the idea
of ‘mainstream’ are excluded from opportunities
and benefits
• Segregation – we have diversity, and instead of
adapting our ‘mainstream’ to include diversity, we
offer another alternative that runs alongside the
mainstream
• Integration – we recognise the need to be inclusive
of diversity, and we do things like running specific
equity programs to assist people of diversity to
succeed in the mainstream.
• Inclusion – recognise all diversity and design
‘mainstream’ to be inclusive of the full range f
needs and create universal environments where
everyone can succeed.

Can you think of examples in your own
lives/experiences where you have
observed these four approaches?
• Exclusion
• Segregation
• Integration
• Inclusion
What characteristics set these apart?
What could be done for us to see more
examples of ‘inclusion’ in our workplaces
and communities?

This Harvard University (2016) video
looks at the role of ‘behavioural
design’ to address our biases and
improve gender equality.
We are bias – we are human!
So what strategies can we engage to
challenge our biases and improve
equity and inclusion? Source: https://
