Assessment 2: Experiment Report

Assessment 2: Experiment Report

OVERVIEW

Over the first six (6) sessions of the block, all students have been given small, post class activities to complete. Three (3) out of the six post class activities are to be included in your final report. Each activity involves the completion of a small ‘kitchen science’ experiment and this assessment task involves reporting on the outcome of some of these experiments. This task will develop your ability to visualise some of the key principles of chemistry.

It is recommended that you complete each experiment following the session that relates to that experiment. These experiments are designed to help you understand some of the concepts from each session and completing them before the following session will avoid confusion and consolidate your knowledge before moving on.

LENGTH

300 words for each experiment discussion (you will need to be very succinct)

DUE DATE

Midnight Sunday, following session 6

DETAILS

Students will conduct small experiments following each session and reflect on the results of these in the report.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. After each session – Read through the task carefully and gather the materials needed to complete the experiment/s;
  2. Observing the safety measures given, conduct the experiment;
  3. Note the outcome of the experiment, answer questions and complete any tasks specified in the discussion;
  4. Complete each experiment following the session that relates to that experiment;
  5. Decide which three (3) of the post class activities will be included in your final report;
  6. The final report needs to be in the format of a lab report.
    include and the following:
    1. A title, making note of which experiments are being discussed (E.g. Session 1 post class activity);
    2. Introduction (no more than 100 words)
    3. Method- we do not expect you to write out the method here. Please include the instructions you were given in the appendix. You can then just write the following statement: “The method for this experiment is outlined in appendix XX”
    4. Results- just give a brief summary of your results- this could be in table format and may include your images (keep this section very brief)
    5. Discussion- discuss your results here (this is the section that we will be focus of the rubrics):
      What did you notice during the experiment?
      What are the experiment questions asking?
      Explain the fundamental chemistry behind this?

      Please do not write out the question prompts- these are just a guide to what you are expected to write about in the discussion.
    6. Conclusion- What have you learnt and how does this relate to formulations? (no more than 100 words)
    7. References
    8. Appendix
  • Please include images in your report- these should be labelled and used correctly according to APA guidelines.
  • Correct APA referencing is expected throughout the report.

Assessment CRITERIA

  • Engagement with the topics and explanation of the experiments findings (for each activity) [10];
  • Depth of understanding of the chemistry principles demonstrated in each experiment (for each activity)  [20];
  • Grammar, spelling and use of medical and scientific terms and images, if included, are used correctly (for overall report) [10 marks].
  • Please refer to the Assessment 2- Report Rubric for further details of the assessment criteria.

Submit your assessment

Please submit your Assessment 2: Experiment Report as a [.doc or .docx] to the VUCollaborate Dropbox by midnight Sunday following session 6.

Please ensure you have followed the previous instructions related to the assessment and saved in the correct format and file name.

FeedBACK

  • You will receive written feedback on this assignment, when submitted as a final chapter, within five days via the Turnitin feedback and marking rubrics in VUcollaborate
  • Please look out for an announcement around this time alerting you to feedback on your assessment.
  • We will also be discussing generalised feedback on this assessment in class during Session 11
  • If you have further general queries regarding Assessment 2, please post them to the Assessment 2 – Experiment Report Discussion forum.
