One of the best ways you can support language development in early childhood is to help children develop phonological awareness. A child’s level of phonological awareness in early childhood is a strong predictor of that child’s reading and spelling success later on in school. There is some evidence that working towards developing this skill now can help reduce a child’s chances of developing a reading disorder later on.
The website http://www.readingresource.net/phonemic awarenessactivities.html presents a large number and variety of activities to help children build these skills. Some are in the activities download, others are described right on the page if you scroll down far enough.
We can divide these activities into six broad categories: (1) Preparatory activities help develop listening habits. (2) Rhyming activities draw children’s attention to the sound patterns of language. (3) Phoneme awareness activities teach the basic sound units in that child’s native language. (4) Segmenting activities help children break down sentences into words, syllables, and phonemes. (5) Blending activities help children put sounds back together into words and sentences.
