They are similar in composition. Fluid that is forced out of the capillary walls and into the intercellular spaces is known as interstitial fluid. Approximately 90% of this flows back into the venous end of the capillaries where hydrostatic pressure is low and osmotic pressure is high. The remaining 10% enters the lymphatic capillaries and is called lymph. Both interstitial fluid and lymph are similar in composition to blood plasma except that they do not contain any of the larger components such as red blood cells platelets and plasma as these are too large to pass through the capillary walls. The thing that sets these two fluids apart are their location.
