Businesses today deliver their services and products in the form of projects.The increased globalisation has made it essential for organisations to manage their projects efficiently and effectively in order to survive.So,the question arises what skills and competencies are required by Project managers in managing these projects which consists of multi-disciplinary teams and group efforts?.With ever evolving market demands and environment, there has been a shift from not only the requirement of technical skills and sound knowledge for the project managers but the importance of soft skills and other competencies as well in order to be an effective and successful project manager (Brill, Bishop & Walker, 2006). People skills and associated behaviour are one of the core competencies that needs to be present in a project manger in order to effectively manage people_As project managers need to deal with different teams all the time it is thus essential to have good and clear relationship with team members. To get the most out of every individual, the project manager should be able to reinforce the good behaviour of team members by establishing and maintaining good communication among them (Skulmoski & Hartman, 2010).For example, Active listening and continuous feedback to people etc form effective communication that is highly desirable skill for effective people management and thus project mangement (Keil, Lee & Deng, 2013). Apart from conununication skills, cross-cultural knowledge and management is another important skill required for an effective Project manger_As: organizations today not only employ people from different regions of the world but they have their business partners and customers belonging to varied regions, different cultures etc.A project manager must know- what ticks the people and what not, they must understand the hidden cues under people’s behaviour and thoughts originating from different cultures.So: in order to effectively manage international teams and projects and build strong trust with team members, they need to be cross-culturally aware (Eberlin, 2008) Not only that, Positive leadership styles are a must for a successful project manager.Leadership competencies focusing on People leadership,negotiation, team motivation, flexibility ,critical analysis and judgement along with vision and imagination is what makes a project manager competent and distinct.For example: critical analysis of the project is essential but it is equally unportant to be imaginative and creative for doing something unique (Muller &Turner, 2010).Not only that, the behavioural competencies including reliability, ethical values and openeness make a huge impact on the success and effectiveness of a project manager (Fisher. 2011) A very interesting project honored as 2011 recipient of Project Management Institute Distinguished Project Award was the building of the World’s largest Gas seperation plant(GSP-6) at the time of completion in Rayong,Thailand by Samsung Engineering CO.,Ltd.The plant was built to power Thailand’s petrochemical, commercial, domestic and transport markets.The plant recovers ethane, propane and other components from natural gas.G.SP-6 u-as an expansion of Map Ta Phut Gas Separation complex by facility wide increase of 65°o (www.pini.org).They used benefit measurement method to obtain the subjective and objective benefit data through they measured the benefit of growing global market for gas related facilities on the back of booming global shale gas industry.So, they planned to expand their product
