This module is designed to develop your understanding of the literature and culture of the twentieth century, and to strengthen your abilities in literary analysis.
Through a close reading of representative texts, the module will explore the historical and critical contexts within which modern writers strove to ‘make it new’ in poetry, fiction and also drama.
You will read a variety of genres: poetry, drama, novel and short stories from diverse national and historical contexts covering the shift from modernism to postmodernism.
The module considers both formal and thematic issues arising from these text as well as historical, sociological and intellectual contexts of literature.
Presentation is crucial as is the ability to write clearly and correctly; grammar,
syntax,
verb conjugation,
register and the overall coherence of your arguments will be taken into consideration in the marking process.
We strongly encourage independent thought and research i.e. reading ‘around’ your subject beyond lecture notes.
Essays should be: Double-spaced Font size 12 (using a clear font such as Times New Roman or Ariel)
Insert page numbers, either at the top right or bottom right hand corner
Use italics for ALL titles of books, long poems (e.g. The Waste Land), plays, films and journals.
Titles of short poems, chapters and essays are in single quotation marks
Each new paragraph must be indent
Quotations:
(1) indented on both sides of the page,
(2) have no inverted commas around it,
(3) single spaced Use footnotes rather than endnotes for ease of reading Use the automatic ‘Insert’
