ACC30003 Forensic Accounting S2, 2018 Assignment
Investigation into AFL betting fraud (20%)
(must be done in pairs or threes*)
Topic background:
You have recently started a graduate placement at Victoria Police, and have been assigned to a team
investigating AFL betting fraud. Your team has a copy of the laptop of the accused ringleader and are
now in the process of gathering evidence by scrutinising the data files. You have been given a file
showing “all games in chronological order.xlsx”, and have been asked to look for instances where
data from 1897 to 2017 has been changed. To do this you will need to access the original data file,
which can be found at: https://afltables.com/afl/stats/biglists/bg.html
Specifically you are required to:
Find 5 examples of where data in the file you have has been changed from the original data;
Clearly explain the process used to find the changes (assume the person you are explaining
to knows nothing about AFL or Excel);AssignmentTutorOnline
Your assignment will be assessed based on the following criteria:
1 mark for each of the 5 changes found (please don’t assume – use Google to confirm your
suspicions where appropriate).
o Marked out of 5 points.
1 mark for your explanation of the process used and rationale underlying your investigation.
Questions to consider:
o Have I explained in sufficient detail to enable someone else to replicate my
investigation?
o Have I explained in words what my findings mean?
o Marked out of 15 points.
NOTE: Assignment is worth 20% of your final grade in this unit.
Submission requirements:
Due Date: Sunday 7th October 2018 (11.59pm).
o Assignments must be submitted in Word processing format => a signed coversheet
must be included (not just typed names). If you don’t know how to do this => ask!
Use student last names to name the submission file (eg. Muir_Downe.docx);
Only ONE student per pair is to upload the draft/final assignment to Turnitin (ie. there is no
“draft” folder).
* Note: For accreditation purposes this part of the assignment must be done in pairs or threes – any
variation to this must have the express approval of the convenor at least 1 week before the due
date.
