This visual analysis will focus on interpreting a work of digital art for its theme (related to the topic
of “technology and human nature”), using the characters, setting, and/or tone in addition to how visual
devices (e.g., line and movement; placement/space and balance; size/shape and scale; color) help support
or enhance that interpretation.
Purpose: Visual analyses are not commonly assigned outside of Fine and Performing Arts, yet art in all of
its forms has impacted culture since the invention of visuals on cave walls! Therefore, we must understand
how visuals are texts to be interpreted
The features for a critical analysis are very “academic” and formal. You will
not use “I” in this writing, for analysis should be as objective as possible, and one way to achieve this is to
discuss texts using third person. You will describe as fully as possible what is IN the image so that you
orientate your readers to the digital art. You should also provide the name of the artist (if known) and the
title of the artwork (if there is one). You will need to use visual analysis terminology (both visual elements
AND visual devices) to help you make the case for how your interpretation of the image is possible.
You will have a main focus in your essay, and this is typically found within the first paragraph or
two. (*See NOTE.) You will go well beyond the 5-paragraph essay format, for the 5-paragaraph essay limits
the depth needed for this kind of analysis; however, the essay will still be organized in a logical way
(smooth movement from one point to the next), and the development of your essay will be rich in detail and
explanation.
