For this discussion I will be against wind power.
Wind power has the potential to be a sole and reliable means for energy to the average layperson. But what they do not know is the infrastructure that is needed. In reality, going totally renewable is not possible due to fluctuations in our weather. Engineers packed the Pacific Northwest’s Columbia River Gorge with thousands of wind turbines that power two million to three million homes.Changing weather shifts winds across the broad span of turbines, creating huge power swings(Fairley, 2018). Is this reality too much for an engineer to fix, not at all. The solution is to make a smart grid for the weather in lieu of the ever changing products of nature. This will end up being ineffective and due to renewable energies only making up a very, very small margin of our total consumed power, is it even worth it? Wind power must still compete with conventional generation sources on a cost basis. Depending on how energetic a wind site is, the wind farm might not be cost competitive. Even though the cost of wind power has decreased dramatically in the past 10 years, the technology requires a higher initial investment than fossil-fueled generators(Advantages, n.d.). The real solution instead of wind power is to maximize the efficiency of our coal power plants.
