Your task is to interview two individuals who are currently in their middle adulthood (aged
above 40 years old), whom are of different gender, to find out his/her main challenges during
this stage of life compared to their early adulthood and consider if they have attained balance
in the midst of physical and psychological changes associated with aging.
a) Explain the major changes (biological, cognitive, socio-emotional) experienced by the two
individuals whom you have interviewed, in terms of the concepts of gain (growth) and loss
(decline). Critically discuss the theories and/or principles you have learnt, and apply these
ideas to understand how developmental processes have contributed to the main challenges
faced by them. (35 marks)
b) Determine what “balance” means to each individual, in accordance to their current life
situation, and consider how this matches to our contemporary understanding of it. Take
note of where their priorities lie and what factors are most important to them at the moment.

c) Based on the developmental theories and/or principles, pick one particular aspect of life to
help those in middle-adulthood to overcome the challenges and changes, and design and
illustrate one specific activity that could be taught to promote healthy balance in their life.
