Length: 600 words

Weighting: Ungraded

The first assignment is to write a Problem Statement that outlines your understanding of the significance of the issue, the global governance challenge you will be researching, and your client’s objectives in relation to the issue.

Use the following subheadings to organise your assignment (but replace ‘the client’ and ‘the issue’ with the actual ones for your project:

Significance of [the issue] globally and for [the client]

Key contemporary global governance challenges in relation to [the issue]

[The client’s] key objectives in engagement with global governance processes in relation to [the issue]

This assignment has two stages. In this first stage you will share a draft of your Problem Statement with other students and provide feedback on each others’ work. The draft is not assessed but it provides you with additional feedback and a chance to read others’ work.

On-campus option: Bring three printed copies of your Draft Problem Statement to the second workshop on Saturday 30 March. You will read other students’ drafts in class and provide feedback there using the form we will provide in class.

Online option: Submit your Draft Problem Statement here by Saturday 30 March. At noon on Sunday 31st you will be assigned three other students’ drafts to provide feedback on, using the form provided. You won’t be allocated any to review unless you have already submitted yours. If you submit late and haven’t been allocated any reviews, let us know and we will manually allocate some for you. Please provide feedback by the weekend of 6-7 April.

The clearer and more specific your suggestions are, the better. As well as giving useful feedback, you will also learn a lot by reviewing others’ work and being forced to think about how you would improve it. When you are reviewing, write as many notes as you can for yourself about ideas that you can apply when you go back to revise your own work.

Then you will have two weeks to revise your Problem Statement and submit it for assessment by Sunday 14 April.
