ASSIGNMENT #1 (Due 4/22/2019: 10 AM)
Computer Exercise: Logistic Regression
Use Book 5 dataset observation #380-680 for this assignment
Recode “depressed state of mind” (depress) variable into a dichotomous variable with two groups: those who rated themselves as rarely depressed are scored 0, and those who rated themselves as sometimes to routinely depressed are scored 1. Using the new variable as an outcome variable, determine which of the following variables increase the odds of being depressed.
- age
- gender
- smoking history
- Quality of life in the past month
- total IPA
- Open dataset Book 5 observation # 380-680
- Recode appropriate variables.
For this analysis, please recode the following variables into dichotomous variables with two groups:
| Old Value | New Value | |
| depressed state of mind | rarely depressed (1) | not depressed (0) |
| sometimes (2), often (3), and routinely (4) depressed | depressed (1) | |
| smoking history | still smoking (2) | smoking (1) |
| quit smoking (1) and never smoked (0) | not smoking (0) | |
| Quality of life in the past month | very dissatisfied (1) through sometimes fairly unhappy (3) | dissatisfied (0) |
| generally satisfied (4) through extremely happy (6) | satisfied (1) |
- Assumptions check is not necessary.
- Run Logistic Regression. Enter age and gender in the first block and recoded smoking history, quality of life and total IPA score in the second block. Read the document, How to Run Logistic Regression.
- Interpret SPSS output and write up your findings.
- Results should include the goodness of fit test results for a final model, classification results (sensitivity, specificity, overall percentage), total variance explained by the predictors, a final logistic regression equation model, results of significance test (Wald) and Interpretation of odd ratio for each predictor.
- Logistic regression coefficient summary table
- Submit the followings:
- A text file

ASSIGNMENT # 2 (Due 4/25/2019: 10 AM)
Intermediate Statistics: Computer Application and Analysis of Data
Nursing 715
Spring 2019
Final Project: 40%
Use dataset on POLIT A for this assignment
The final project entails a statistical analysis of real-world health-related data. The goal of this project is to encourage exploration of data relevant to your area of practice/interest inquiry and to offer you an opportunity to select and apply appropriate statistical strategies to answer a research question(s). You have the option of working with either the datasets provided by the instructor or with self-provided data.
The body of the paper should be single-spaced with the following categories:
- Introduction (1 page)
- Statistical data analysis (2-3 pages)
- Discussion (1-2 pages)
- References. I expect to see at least 10 peer reviewed references.
Instructions:
The best way to succeed in the final project assignment is to plan well ahead of the deadline and begin outlining, seeking a relevant data set and writing the paper before it is due.
1.Topic Choice: Choose a topic, which you are interested in -POLIT A. Conduct a thorough literature review of the topical area. The data set I chose for this project is POLIT A (see attached Data).
- Introduction (1 page). Based on your literature review, state a brief background in your chosen area of inquiry. Write a problem statement, and from that formulate a research question you hope to answer. You must seek my approval for the topic of inquiry and the research question.
- Statistical Data Analysis (2-3 pages). Find a dataset for the topic of your choice (POLIT A). Select and apply an appropriate inferential statistical analysis (e.g., ANOVA, ANCOVA, RM-ANOVA, Correlation, Multiple Regression, and Logistic Regression) to answer the research question(s). Be sure to check any assumptions underlying the statistics and conduct data transformations where appropriate.
Report the results using the following guideline:
- Write a brief description of the data source.
- Identify independent, dependent, and covariate `variables, if any.
- Formulate and report statistical (null) hypothesis. What relationship between the independent and dependent variables do you want to know about?
- How are the independent and dependent variables measured? Report
- the level of measurement for the variables.
- What statistics are you using to answer your question? Why?
- Report the results of assumption check. If you have done data transformation for the variables, report the findings.
- What are the findings of your statistical hypothesis (null hypothesis) testing? Based on the findings, what conclusions can be drawn?
- Include graphical displays (e.g., residual scatter plots for a regression analysis), when appropriate.
- Include a summary table(s).
- Discussion (1-2 pages).
- Discuss if the data analyzed shed any new valuable light on this topic and why
- Provide suggestions about how this research topic could be further pursued
Your submission should include:
- A text file in Word
- SPSS output
