The project topic is study the characteristics of various self-healing concrete to use the selfhealing
concrete in the durable structure such as dam. Self-healing concrete uses various kinds of
self-healing agents to heal the cracks and different agents have different efficiency in crack
healing. Self-healing of the cracks mostly depends on the surrounding conditions and the type of
agent used. So, the objective of this research is to check the crack-healing efficiency of the
various self-healing agents under various circumstances specially, under the water. Other
objective is to check the water tightness of the structure after cracking and self-healing so that,
we can get idea about the recovery of water tightness achieved after the self-healing. The other
thing is, every agent has its own limitations so, we need to identify the problems associated while
incorporating the self-healing agents in the construction.
The upstream side of the dam always remain submerged in the water it is indeed to identify the
behaviour of agents under the water for long duration. The other important aspect of this research
is to, check the self-healing procedure of various agents because, agents such as Bacteria spores
and Bitumen have the different process of healing. Another key point is to check the life span of
agents as the dams are designed for longer period such as 100years, the self-healing agent should
be viable for this period. So here, the repeatability issue comes, once the self-healing agent is
used what next because, the cracks can occur again. The major challenges that might be facing
during this project work are, finding the various kind of self-healing agents and check their
permeability, selection of the mixing methods, identifying the agents which can be suitable for
dam conditions.
