On successful completion of this assignment students should be able to:

  • Define and explain the fundamental concepts methods and techniques used in information systems analysis and design.
  • Apply contemporary information systems analysis and design methods and techniques to a realistic case study.
  • Effectively communicate systems analysis and design methods and techniques to real world problems.

Introduction and Background

Early in 2010, Mr Pavlov and Mrs Norris established a boarding kennel for cats and dogs (hereafter referred to as Pampered Pets Palace or PPP) in the Western suburbs of Brisbane. The kennel operates 7 days a week. The kennel capacity is as follows: 50 cat runs, 100 single-dog dog runs and 25 two-dog dog runs. The kennel has also recently completed 30 luxury units (20 for dogs and 10 for cats). In addition to simply providing board for animals, Pampered Pets Palace, also provides additional services such as grooming, flea treatments etc. The kennel employs a number of staff in a variety of operations. Both owners are also actively involved in the day to day operations. There is a fulltime receptionist/office worker, Phyllis, and a number of kennel hands.

During recent months, especially at peak times such as holidays, there have been a number of problems that have arisen with the bookings process. Some of these include:

  • animals being booked and never showing
  • animals arriving with a booking number and no corresponding kennel available
  • animals that were supposed to receive additional services not receiving them etc.

To help prevent these kinds of problems in the future, to look more professional to clients and to streamline operations, the owners have decided to automate the booking system and maybe additional aspects of the kennel operation as well. Most of the staff were enthusiastic about the possibilities so the owners decided to proceed.

No member of the shop staff could be considered to be an information systems expert. Thus, PPP has decided to employ you to recommend a course of action

Pampered Pets – Preliminary Investigation

You believe that Pampered Pet’s business would gain the most benefit from automating the parts of the current manual system initially mentioned by management. In addition you consider that the shop could make better use of technology in some of their other day to day operations, for example customer profiling, or the use of standard accounting software.

Following a meeting with management and staff, and after much discussion between the owners it has been decided to hire you to conduct a more detailed investigation. The deliverables of this investigation are on StudyDesk and at the end of this document

Determining Requirements

To determine their requirements in greater detail, you plan to conduct a number of interviews with Pampered Pets staff. You also intend to use other information gathering methods to confirm how the business currently operates and how it should operate in the future. Based on the information gathered, you will determine the processes that are required to be automated, the data that needs to be collected, stored and used, and the different reports that are required by the PPP business.

Analysing Requirements

Some background information to help with your analysis is as follows. The kennel runs a normal boarding operation and provides specialized services for the animals during their stay. The bookings for each of the kennels is kept manually in a book. This book lists each of the kennels and the animal booked in each day. Changes to the bookings are frequently made. Once a client arrives, a card is started (and is later used for billing purposes) and their stay and services provided are recorded daily by hand on the card. At the conclusion of the stay the card is used to determine the final bill.

The above analysis provides very limited information (which is typical in practice). You are required to undertake a more detailed analysis of issues that surround the bookings and services system after including additional thoughts of your own.

For this assignment concentrate on the existing system and the problems it presents.
