Questions – Homeostasis 2020
(AC.
1.1) – Explain the requirement for regulation of the internal
environment with reference to the following named homeostatic
systems:
Glucose
concentration
Breathing
rate
Heart
rate
Osmoregulation
Guidance
Include
in your answer if the homeostatic mechanism is a positive or negative
feedback, the organs involved, hormones and their functions (AC. 1.2,
AC. 4.1). Word limit (500 words) Images must be included and referred
to support your answer.
Scenario
When
labour begins a surge of hormones are released by the foetus. In
response this hormone surge results in the secretion of oxytocin to
initiate changes in the uterine walls to tighten and flex.
State
whether this is an example of negative or positive feedback, and
which organs are involved. Explain your answer. (AC. 1.2). Word limit
(150 words)
(b) In a person with an infection caused by E. coli,
the immune system will respond to fight off the infection. The
chemicals produced during that immune response, raises the core body
temperature, causing the thermo-regulatory setting to also change.
State the part of the brain affected – explain your answer. (AC.2.1).
Word limit (150 words).
(c)
During exercise the breathing rate increases. During the recovery
period after exercise the breathing rate returns to normal. State the
part of the brain that would be damaged if this could not occur and
explain your answer. Word limit (150 words)
(AC.2.2)
– Multiple sclerosis is a disease caused by the demyelination in
neurones involved in coordination muscle movements. Use annotated
images to explain how nerve impulse generation and propagation would
be affected in individuals with multiple sclerosis. You must include
a step by step process of the annotated images. Include in your
answer a comparison of normal impulse generation and propagation in
an individual who is not affected by multiple sclerosis. Word limit
(100 words).
(AC.
2.3) – Depression has been linked to imbalances in the brain with
regard to the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is caused by a lack of
serotonin in the synaptic cleft of neurone pathways.
Use images
to describe how serotonin acts as a neurotransmitter. Include details
as part of your answer to explain synaptic transmission and
communication between neurones in serotonin pathways of the brain of
someone who suffers from depression. Word limit (100 words).
(AC.
3.1) – Explain the structure, mechanisms, and the role of the skin in
maintaining a normal body temperature, using the following
structures:
(a)
Sweat glands
(b)
Erector muscle
(c)
Blood vessels
Word count (250 words) Image(s) must be
included and referred to to support your answer.
