Water Engineering Project: design a drainage channel for the hatched land.
Report Brief (30%)
For this coursework, you are required to design a drainage channel
for the hatched land, which is shown in the map (in dwg format) attached
with the assignment on Canvas. The following should be considered in
your design:
Assuming that the drainage channel also drains a catchment of an area in
km2 corresponding to your ID/100000 (eg.ID 678379 the catchment area is
6.78 km2).
The time of concentration for upstream catchment is ID/200000 in hours
The upstream catchment average slope is ID/1000000
The new drainage channel needs to be capable of conveying the 50 years
return period peak flow. The owner of the land would also like to see
the rating curve (depth/flow rate curve) for the new designed channel up
to the freeboard.
Use the closest rain gage based on the easting and northing of the location in the map.
Hourly rainfall data is more appropriate for the design.
Assume the type of land, the runoff coefficient, slope of the new channel
You are to apply your knowledge in the following manner:
- Gather appropriate data on problem, including representative boundary conditions, in case
of missing information you have to provide reasonable assumption for missing data. - In the first instance, conduct and document an analytical calculation of a design storm
and peak discharge for the drainage channel using appropriate methods. This should
include peak storm, frequency and duration relationship. - Conduct and document numerical analysis of the hydraulic design of the channel using an
appropriate method (uniform vs gradually varied flow).
