For your final paper in this class, I want you to create an argumentative thesis statement that you believe is true based on the work you’ve read this semester. Here are a couple of possible set-ups:
I believe _____________________________.
Because ____________________________we should _________________.
Example: I believe that it is impossible for most people who are born poor to rise up past lower-middle class.
OR
Because many of the impoverished areas in the United States are populated by people of color, we should build more educational institutions in those areas to enable them to receive an education that can propel them out of poverty.
Your paper should prove what you say you believe or give evidence for why we should do what you say we should do. You could also talk about how to get those things done.
You will need to acknowledge at least one opposing opinion and create a concession and rebuttal. This looks like:
Some people may disagree with this idea. They think _______________________ (Here you will thoroughly express why they may disagree with you. Make sure to acknowledge the fullness of their argument against you.) I do acknowledge that they have a point. However, my belief (or my idea) still stands because _____________________________________. (Here, you have to answer their concern. You can’t ignore their reason for disagreeing and just give a different reason to believe you.) There is an Opposing Opinion Power Point attached below. Please take the time to look over this. At the bottom of the Presentation there are notes for each of the slides. Make sure to read those, as well.
You will want to carefully craft your argument using the strategies that we’ve worked on this semester (comparison/contrast, cause/effect, definition, etc.), as well as using appropriate rhetoric (ethos, pathos, logos) and appropriate tone for someone who disagrees with you.
You may use any of the sources we’ve read this semester. In addition, you will need to find THREE sources from the library database for your paper. At least ONE source needs to support the OPPOSING SIDE. Please remember to use p. 19 (Emerging) as a way to sandwich the quotes within your own explanation and reasoning.
You are welcome to draw from and use portions of other papers you’ve written this semester in order to complete this final work. You are welcome to focus on one of the areas we’ve highlighted this semester or you can combine thoughts from two or more sections.
As always, use APA format for in-text citations and create an APA reference page at the end of your paper citing the sources you’ve used.
Here’s an example of an outline that you could use:
