SolidWorks (SW) – a solid modeller CAD system.
The purpose of this component of manufacturing technology is to become
familiar with Solidworks, a standard, widely used, Computer Aided Design
system that you will continue to use in the later years of your degree. This is
largely a self-learning component of the course, you are expected to work
through the SW online tutorials, then produce a design of your own to submit for
assessment. The demonstrators will give you guidance on working through the
tutorials and on developing your design, but will not provide any formal
teaching. The steps you should follow, together with hints and suggestions, are
below.
1 Download Solidworks to your PC or Mac following the directions
provided in the announcements on the Manufacturing Technology
canvas homepage, and in the document on the Solidworks page. If you
are unable to install Solidworks on your computer send an email,
outlining the details, to amme.pcsupport@sydney.edu.au cc
to steven.armfield@sydney.edu.au with the subject heading
Manufacturing Technology, can’t install Solidworks
2 Zoom into your lab session to get advice and guidance from
demonstrators.
3 Do SW online tutorials first, that is the Introduction and lessons 1, 2 & 3
4 You will be assessed on
o Completing the SW tutorials (Introduction and Lessons 1,2,3) 60%
(1.5 marks per tutorial)
o Completing an open ended assignment of your choice 40% (4 marks)
Open Ended Assignment
Use A3 landscape format on your engineering drawing, which gives you more
space to put different views of your part.
Your assignment can consist of one or more assembled parts of any 3D
object. It does not need to be complicated (this is an introduction to
SolidWorks)
Your assignment should be done based on the rules and format introduced in
the tutorial for an engineering drawing. You lose marks if you do not use a
proper format to assign different views in your engineering drawing.
An example assignment is included below (using the parts in SW lesson 2, you
should create your own parts). This assignment would receive 2 marks out of
4.
You must create the components for your assignment yourself. Do not
copy parts or objects from the web. If you copy from the web you will
receive zero for your assignment.
Submitting Assignment and Tutorials
Type your SID , full name and the lab session you were scheduled for in bold
and capital letters in the table of each of your drawings
Stitch your tutorials and assignment together as a single pdf file. Your final
pdf file will contain 4 drawings
1- One drawing for Introduction tutorial including the pressure plate part with three
standard views with dimensions in A3, ANSI, Landscape format.
2- One drawing for Lesson 1 tutorial including the assembly front part with three
standard views with dimensions in A3, ANSI, Landscape format.
3- One drawing for Lessons 2 tutorial including the assembly part with three standard
views with dimensions in A3, ANSI, Landscape format.
4- One drawing for Assignment including the assembly or single part with three
standard views with dimensions in A3, ANSI, Landscape format.
Submit your assignment and tutorials on the Manufacturing Technology
canvas site. The deadline for this is Friday of Week 9, a week after completion
of all scheduled lab classes.
