C172 Argumentative Essay

1. TOPIC

Has the US Army maintained its status as a profession? Argue why or why not. Give at least one example to support your argument.

2. REQUIREMENT

1. You must write an argumentative essay for the topic specified above. The assessment requires you to apply critical thinking skills and effective writing skills. As your first writing assignment, the C172 essay is a short assessment. Use the faculty feedback you receive on the C172 assignment to better prepare you to write the C174 analytical essay.

2. Your essay is due after you have completed lessons C120 through C172. The assignment is worth 20% of the C100 block grade. In particular, you may want to review the following lessons: C120 Stewarding the Profession, C171 Effective Writing, and C172 Writing Workshops.

3. Double-space your paper with one-inch margins all around (top, bottom, left, and right) in Arial font, size 12-pitch. The paper should be one-to-two typed pages (approximately 600 words); do not exceed two pages. Indent new paragraphs five spaces.

4. Your paper should include the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and be generally free of errors. Use active voice and third person for academic writing; use complete sentences (subject, verb, complement) that communicate full thoughts. Finally, organize the sentences to construct a coherent argument leading to your paper’s conclusion.

5. You may not discuss this assignment with anyone other than a DDE faculty member or your academic advisor. Another person may proofread your paper for correctness and clarity; however, this person may not be a current or former CGSOC student. You must list this person as a reference in your footnotes or endnotes.

6. Always cite the sources used to write your paper. If something is not your original thought, you must cite your source using either footnotes or endnotes IAW the Turabian style of documentation; do not use parenthetical citations. This includes direct quotations, paraphrases, and summaries of the assigned readings, doctrinal references, videos, or any outside sources.

7. To complete this requirement, you must submit the essay and the associated 1009w Writing Evaluation Form to DDE using the instructions provided in Blackboard. If you do not complete the student self-assessment portion of the 1009w Form, your grader will deduct 5 points from your final score.
