Part 1: Glenn Pre-incident indicators are a vital tool in threat assessment because they are factors that are continuously being evaluated for the benefit of predicting violent events. Indicators are broken apart into two classifications, those being trend and individual. Trend indicators are derived from social, economic, and cultural factors. Trend indicators provide information such as, types of crimes, and frequencies that they are being committed, levels of gang activity, poverty levels and drug activity. Individual indicators are those indicators that are unique to persons within a particular environment, particularly those individuals who have criminal backgrounds. Individual indicators can be a great help in either developing a rapid response plan to an incident, or even the prevention of an incident. (Nemeth 2018) The use of pre-incident indicators by private security, as a tool for threat assessment is very beneficial. This tool can be argued is more effective for private security than for sworn law enforcement. “What private security offers is a more aggressive approach to pre-incident prevention than can possibly be exhibited by its colleagues in the public sector.” (CP Nemeth 2018, P. 208) The idea behind this thought is that security is not burdened with all of the same tasks that their public counterparts are. Private security can generally spend more time getting to know their environment and those individuals in it. Threat assessment is not as much about analyzing a threat that has already been made, but about identifying potential threats based upon observations. “The focus of a threat assessment is not if a person makes a threat but if they pose a threat.” (Spicer 2015) The more attention that is paid to pre-indicator the easier it is going to be for private security to foresee potential violence and attempt prevention, or at least be prepared to respond to it. A pre-incident indicator for a threat assessment is a way that a security guard or a police officer can determine if an actual criminal activity is going to happen. For example, an area like the airport can be a big place and hard to pick an individual out of the crowd to determine that he/she is going to commit a crime. With a threat assessment, it can help us answer What, when, How, and where. If a person walks to the line in the airport to pass TSA and that person sees the x-ray and security personnel, decides to turn around and look for a way past the security but in place is a way to know that a person is up to no good. A person reactions in a secured location can help with identifying if a crime is going to be committed. A threat assessment must be done on a regular basis to keep up with environmental changes. Threat assessments help security guards have an understanding of what they are looking for. In my school for example if I know a kid acts a certain way and that kid comes in acting a different way that would give me a suspicion that a problem maybe percent. When approaching the kid to find out what’s going on and he runs from me then I really know something is wrong and get administration involved. Sometimes a person’s action can tell you a lot.
